Action and Fun 12 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This film is everything you expect it to be, provided you know what to expect. It is a comic book action and adventure with a lot of tongue in cheek fun. It is not intended to be taken seriously and as long as you bear that in mind it's non-stop fun. John Woo followers may find this a bit odd if they are expecting all violence and action, although there is plenty of that too.

John Woo is often remembered for Hard Boiled, or MI:II so its's great to see one of his lesser known films get a rerelease. Once a Thief has all the trademark Woo features - exaggerated shoot outs, fast-paced action, melodrama, and romance. It's perfect if you've enjoyed other John Woo movies, or other Hong Kong action. I rate it as one of his better ones, plus it's got two HK greats - Chow Yun Fat and Leslie Cheung - who are always great to watch

Once A Thief 27 Dec 2011
By Anake
Format:DVD
I had purchased the TV series before I bought this DVD, even though it's a pilot for the series. I have not seen the original movie (as I understand this particular film is a remake), so I cannot compare, and I am not a martial arts or kung fu movies fan; I bought it only because I wanted to see some of Nick Lea's work. And even though I do not find this film a brilliant piece (the plot is OK but not the best in the world; there is humour in the film, but I didn't roll on the floor laughing throughout; the actors did a good job, but these were hardly Oscar-winning performances), it was thoroughly entertaining and I enjoyed it very much. I recommend it to those who just want to see some light-hearted action, which is what this was meant to be, obviously.
