Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Secret Garden's latest, Once in a Red Moon, continues along the path of their previous releases such as Songs from a Secret Garden and Dawn of a New Century. Violinist Fionnuala Sherry and pianist/composer Rolf Lovland continue to combine in romantic and soulful ways around melodies that hover between the Romantic composers of the 19th century and the beautiful folk melodies and harmonies of many countries. Sherry's playing is full of passion whatever the setting, giving real red-blooded feeling to whatever musical landscape Lovland's pieces sketch out. Central to the expanded acoustic palette on this new album is the arranging skill of Kjetil Bjerkestrand, who combines absolute transparency of sound with compelling richness of texture. Guest singers Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson illuminate lyrics to different tunes, including a re-setting of the "Danny Boy" melody that becomes a tribute to Lovland's recently deceased mother. Celtic roots are never far away throughout this thoughtful and exquisite album, giving its overall yearning quality a particular and apposite focus. --Keith Shadwick

Having first heard Secret Garden in Norway a few years ago I have collected six of their CDs and "Once in a Red Moon" is, for me, the very best of them all. The mixture of melodies and lyrics is excellent, so gentle in a restless and hectic world, while "You Raise Me Up", first heard by me on the radio, is truely beautiful. Guest musicians are an added bonus, particularly the lovely singing voice of Karen Matheson. All in all I couldn't stop playing "Once in a Red Moon" and I am sure it will continue to be a favourite of mine in the future. Fionnuala Sherry and Rolf Lovland have a tremendous talent for producing tunes that stay in your head, and that you want to go on hearing. I really look forward to more of their music in the future.

This is the fourth and latest Secret Garden album I have bought and is, by far, the best. It shows greater depth and maturity that their others which are, nevertheless, pretty special. As a group, they are maturing very nicely.

For those who are surfing through, but do not own any of their previous releases, winning Eurovision might put you off Secret Garden. Don't be! This album is full of brilliant New Age/Folk/classical sounds and they should be taken seriously. Anyone using the golden voice of Karen Matheson (Capercaillie), the marvelous sounds Anuna or the stellar cello musicianship of Julian Lloyd-Webber (amongst others) is not messing around!

So buy this album (be entranced by the last track, in particluar), lie back and think nice thoughts - then next day, go and buy one (or more) of their other albums.

Top banana!!
