Biography

For those unfamiliar with the duo's New Age chart success, Secret Garden was a secret no more thanks to this year's Super Bowl festivities during which multiplatinum-selling Josh Groban sang their "You Raise Me Up" for a worldwide TV audience estimated at 900 million viewers. His album recording of the song also hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Now The Best Of Secret ... Read more in Amazon's Secret Garden Store

Secret Garden's latest, Once in a Red Moon, continues along the path of their previous releases such as Songs from a Secret Garden and Dawn of a New Century. Violinist Fionnuala Sherry and pianist/composer Rolf Lovland continue to combine in romantic and soulful ways around melodies that hover between the Romantic composers of the 19th century and the beautiful folk melodies and harmonies of many countries. Sherry's playing is full of passion whatever the setting, giving real red-blooded feeling to whatever musical landscape Lovland's pieces sketch out. Central to the expanded acoustic palette on this new album is the arranging skill of Kjetil Bjerkestrand, who combines absolute transparency of sound with compelling richness of texture. Guest singers Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson illuminate lyrics to different tunes, including a re-setting of the "Danny Boy" melody that becomes a tribute to Lovland's recently deceased mother. Celtic roots are never far away throughout this thoughtful and exquisite album, giving its overall yearning quality a particular and apposite focus. --Keith Shadwick

Having first heard Secret Garden in Norway a few years ago I have collected six of their CDs and "Once in a Red Moon" is, for me, the very best of them all. The mixture of melodies and lyrics is excellent, so gentle in a restless and hectic world, while "You Raise Me Up", first heard by me on the radio, is truely beautiful. Guest musicians are an added bonus, particularly the lovely singing voice of Karen Matheson. All in all I couldn't stop playing "Once in a Red Moon" and I am sure it will continue to be a favourite of mine in the future. Fionnuala Sherry and Rolf Lovland have a tremendous talent for producing tunes that stay in your head, and that you want to go on hearing. I really look forward to more of their music in the future.

This is the fourth and latest Secret Garden album I have bought and is, by far, the best. It shows greater depth and maturity that their others which are, nevertheless, pretty special. As a group, they are maturing very nicely.
For those who are surfing through, but do not own any of their previous releases, winning Eurovision might put you off Secret Garden. Don't be! This album is full of brilliant New Age/Folk/classical sounds and they should be taken seriously. Anyone using the golden voice of Karen Matheson (Capercaillie), the marvelous sounds Anuna or the stellar cello musicianship of Julian Lloyd-Webber (amongst others) is not messing around!
So buy this album (be entranced by the last track, in particluar), lie back and think nice thoughts - then next day, go and buy one (or more) of their other albums.
Top banana!!

Another highlight for folk/new age fans.
The Album "Once in a red moon" continues the tradition of norwegian/irish folk music peformed by Secret Garden.
Just close your eyes and listen to "awakening" and you'll get awake.
So sensitive and emotional music will effect everyones heart!
Very brilliant Album - like the others before.
Highlights of the Album:
Song No.7-No.10 and No. 12.

What can i say, a beautiful album. The perfect balance of expertly played instruments (piano, violin etc..)and that celtic theme throughout, makes me tingle everytime i listen to it. My sister plays my favourite song (Promise, track 9) on the piano, and it sounds wonderful, but nothing is more magical than listening to the enchanting Secret Garden themselves. I am waiting for their big break-through, but in my eyes they have acheived so much more than people younger and better looking that themselves. They are so incredibly talented, it makes you have faith in the music industry again, that it is not all stereotyped sticks from the pop factory, but truly spectacular musicians and singers.
Everyone should buy this!

"Once in a red moon" is a symphony for instruments and voice, echoing hebraic and medieval, celtic and spanish musicalities. The elegiac theme in "Awakening" is resumed and varied all along the album, finally ending with dramatic tones of requiem in "Elegie". Two other compositions stand out from the instrumental part: the energetic "Invitation", a record of joyous sonority and beating effect, and "Fairytale", a musical ballad with trobadoric rhythm. The vocal part is dominated by "You raise me up", where Irish voices of Belfast singer Brian Kennedy and Anúna choir are called to illuminate the spirituality of the lyric, and "Gates of dawn", where the powerful, Gaelic melodiosity of Scottish singer Karen Matheson is transposed in a solo performance in English language. Definitely a gem. The included booklet about album making is a masterpiece in its genre.

Every time a new Secret Garden album comes along, it sounds just that bit more special than the last, and I expect the bubble to break and everyone will be talking about them. However, to date they still seem to be low key and little heard of. Maybe this wonderful album will be the one to turn that around!
The mix of Norwegian classical orchestration with the most beautiful and evocative in Celtic music, makes for a sublimely uplifting and relaxing experience. This is not just chill out music, but music to inspire.
The collaborators, particularly Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson add a wonderful extra element which lets the music really breathe, and means the listener will never get bored with the CD - you'll be able to listen to this over and over and over again, making this the best value CD you will buy this year.

The combination of classical and celtic melodies is perfect. There are no words which could adequately describe how beautiful and relaxing the music on this album is. Forget all those "chill out" compliation albums. Buy this and you will not be disappointed. I like this CD so much that I keep buying copies for other people, and I've just ordered 2 more!!!

A little different to previous Sectret Garden CD's. Contains more tracks with an individual vocalist. There are still many "classic" Secret Garden vocal tracks. Track 7 with the Irish Violin and Nordic Keyharp especially interesting and beautiful. Track with Julian Lloyd Weber also of note.
This CD appears to be more personality focused than the last CD.
Anybody who likes Secret Garden will enjoy both the classic and new style tracks. For those that enjoy Celtic Music this would be an interesting addition.
