5.0 out of 5 stars Where reality goes beyond fiction 2 Dec 1998
By A Customer
The first fifth of this book is really interesting. Past that you will be able to close it and put it down only after you have read the very last words even if it means staying up until 4 in the morning as I did.
As a fiction, it would be another of those overdone hero-saves-the-world stories.
As a true story, it is mindboggling and makes you wonder how far human beings can go when it comes to wickedness or courage. It is written in a way that drags you into the story and makes you think and feel like Will, as if you were with him on the roof of that hotel. And you just can't escape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the whole story by far.,,,,, 16 May 2007
William Scully, ex 21 and 22SAS, security consultant and sometime TV/Film actor, is by far and away a more complex and resourceful man than he is portrayed in the book as a true life action hero, not only is it factual it was recognised for that and was awarded the QGM from HRH.He has the looks and stature to match, not only can he "talk the talk", he "walked the walk" .. by way of penn-y-fann. 0A.. 4.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read 9 Aug 2011
By Chris
I first became aware of will Scully as one of the cast of the fantastic series Operation good guys. I was a member of the west mercia police equivalent of this unit whilst this was being aired and it was absolutely hilarious. Will scully played Bill zebub and it was apparent that despite his lack of acting training he was having a ball being involved in the series.
when you read the book "Once a pilgrim" it shows the author to be a man of immense courage and with an incredible sense of adventure that no doubt comes from service with the SAS. I have to admit I read the book in one session and could sense the almost constant danger that the ex pats in sierra leone were living through. There is no doubt that will scully saved many lives by his actions and thoroughly deserved his award of the Queens gallantry medal.

A must read Boys own style true adventure

This is not your McNab type book , this is a as it happened but written with much modesty by a ex Pilgrim the title is without doubt the truest saying about The Regiment. "We are the Pilgrims master"

4.0 out of 5 stars good ripping yarn! 29 April 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I read this book with the expectation of less than its hype. I stand corrected an interesting, and informative if brief book but with an explosive narrative.
not my usual kind of book but an entertaining diversion.
