Another Rave Review for Karen Lane,
By Dave Gelly (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Once in a Lifetime (Audio CD)
"Once in a Lifetime is certainly the real Karen Lane. At least, I think it must be because I know of no-one else who sings with what I can only describe as her demure abandon. It's wholehearted but at the sametime restrained, precisely phrased but not studied. She also has a good instinct for building a programme, including a few old faves, like "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Sometimes I'm Happy", some relative obscurities, a couple of nice originals, and one for the song hounds - in this case the rarely heard verse of "On Green Dolphin Street". Karen Lane surround herself with some wonderful musicians, in particular guitarist Dave Colton, who has a marvelously delicate touch and a harmonic ear that leaves you gasping. Among the changing line ups appear such names as Robin Aspland, Martin Shaw, Jeremy Brown, and Derek Nash, creating fine settings to complement a fine and distinctive singer.
