The brilliant and moving sequel to Land Girls

Product Description

Disasters, disappointments, dashed hopes ... Doesn't seem that easy, just to find a good man, love him and be loved back. But I shan't give up trying. The war is over, but life goes on for Land Girls Prue, Stella and Ag. While two of the girls are married, Prue, the incorrigible flirt, has no one and is engaged in a quest for a man to provide her with security and gold taps. A year after the girls leave Hallows Farm, Prue finds just such a man and a marriage that protects her from the hardships of post-war Manchester. But she still hankers for the life she so loved as a Land Girl, though it's hard to get work on the sort of farm that provided unimaginable happiness during the war. The lives of her two old friends, Stella and Ag, have moved on and neither visit her. Additionally Prue finds that her newly wedded state and fresh horizons fail to supply the answers she seeks. Yet, in the puzzling world beyond the fields, Prue, in her indomitable way, open as ever to each chance encounter, remains buoyant, optimistic and quite sure that the life she imagines is just round yet another corner. Praise for Land Girls: 'A first-class writer' Sunday Telegraph 'Riveting ... evocative and entertaining' Daily Mail 'Huth's controlled, eloquent style has been compared to Jane Austen's, but her talent is entirely original' The Times 'Piquant, witty and entertaining' Tatler 'Huth is a master of this sort of novel, steeped in period atmosphere and gentle irony' Daily Telegraph 'A good story, told with wit and a keen observation of detail' Times Literary Supplement

I had recently seen the film version of Land Girls, the precursor to this book, when I came across Once a Landgirl. I wasn't too sure at first, other than is was good to catch up with what the characters were now supposed to be doing. I think I felt that way due to the feel from the start being quite light, but reading further on, I'd say the book is far from actually being lightweight. Rather, the author, Angela Huth deals with some quite heavy issues and difficult problems with a very human, engaging and empathetic touch. Prue's difficult choices in life, her her inner turmoil at times and her mixed emotions and motives reflect feelings most of us have had at some time. This is ultimately a very optimistic story beautifully played out against a post war background which never falls over into mere nostaglia, its much too bitter sweet and finely written for that. A lovely read, I would definately go back and read other books by Angela Huth now.

A let-down 24 Oct 2010
By Claretta VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I adored Land Girls and really wanted to like Once a Land Girl just as much, but I found it hard to get into. The characters didn't ring as true and I found them much less engaging second time around, and the period feel was less convincing. Judged on its own merits this is a pleasant enough book, but as a sequel to Land Girls it sadly doesn't measure up.

once a decent writer 16 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
I read 'Land Girls' many years back and it piqued my interest enough to read a couple more of Ms Huth's books. I enjoyed her collected short stories and really enjoyed the novel 'Wives of the fishermen' which is easily her finest hour.
So, having enjoyed the book (and the film was very good) of 'Land Girls' I bought this sequel a couple of months ago. It is a very very dull book, badly written and moves at a glacier pace. It centres around just one of the girls from the first novel, Pru, and that is the first big error as she was certainly the least interesting of the three main characters. We pick up her life shortly after the war as she quickly bags herself a rich husband but still wants to shag every man she meets, all of whom want to marry her within hours of meeting.
It took me 4 weeks to read this book, and never felt a compulsion to pick it up as it is comparable to a Mills and Boon romance novel, but much more pretensious. I don't know what happened to Angela Huth, I can only assume she was persuaded by some publisher hoping for fresh film rights or something. Once embarked upon she must have soon discovered she had nothing to add. The first concluded with the three girls meeting many years later and deftly let the reader know all of their fates. This is a totally unnecessary book.

Not as good as the first book and not containing as much humour, though i still enjoyed the read. It definitely has good research but lacks the finesse of the first

Evocative
Very readable book evocative of how it must have been to be a landgirl. We get a lot of war stories, nice to see some showing how it was for some of the non-fighting "army".

sad follow up
I loved the Land Girls and really wanted to see what happened to Stella, Agg and Prue after the war. However, I felt badly let down by this follow up. Read more

not a good as 'Land Girls'...
Whilst I enjoyed this book, kind of, I did not feel it was a worthy successor to the fabulous 'Land Girls'. It was a very 'light' read, a novel for holiday reading. Read more
