I had recently seen the film version of Land Girls, the precursor to this book, when I came across Once a Landgirl. I wasn't too sure at first, other than is was good to catch up with what the characters were now supposed to be doing. I think I felt that way due to the feel from the start being quite light, but reading further on, I'd say the book is far from actually being lightweight. Rather, the author, Angela Huth deals with some quite heavy issues and difficult problems with a very human, engaging and empathetic touch. Prue's difficult choices in life, her her inner turmoil at times and her mixed emotions and motives reflect feelings most of us have had at some time. This is ultimately a very optimistic story beautifully played out against a post war background which never falls over into mere nostaglia, its much too bitter sweet and finely written for that. A lovely read, I would definately go back and read other books by Angela Huth now.
