An excellent and entertaining read, a look behind the life of a talented go getter. As well as a snap shot into the vietnam war at it's start, and the thoughts about it and tactics from the top and the bottom.

Enjoyed this book, both in tone, pace, style and content, a definate 5 star recommendation.

The author is my cousin, and I've heard a number of the stories over the dinner table at one or another Thanksgiving long before they turned up in this book; and when you read this book, that's what you get--true tales conversationally told by a shure-as-shootin' warhorse.

The best thing about the book is its informal authenticity. Written utterly without a ghostwriter and barely touched by any meddling editors, that authenticity comes through.

Stylistically, General Cook may come off looking a little raw, but he spent his life as a fighting man, not a writing man.

A good editor would have turned this from a good read into a great book! I have just finished this and found it started well but just petered out towards the end. The author describes in detail his childhood desire to become a fighter pilot and then waxes lyrical about the training and pre-conflict flying. His subsequent tour in Vietnam becomes anecdotal and odd bits and snippets are repeated where he could have used the page space to expand the detail and his experiences. I would have liked to know more about his family and the post tour service he must have completed.

References to other american war planes and trainers of this era were also made as if the reader would know them instantly. I found myself constantly looking for more detail on the internet to flesh out my understanding of the aircraft he refers to.

I admire the bloke for his quiet confidence and his stoicism, I enjoyed the book but it was rather as if he became bored with writing it towards the end.....
