Product Description

Catherine Itzin, Tribune

"The play works like the ceremonial incense: one sniff of that overpowering sweet scent and you're on a spiritual high so orgasmic, you can almost see St Peter at the heavenly gates."

Book Description

This highly successful comedy is a sharply critical exposition of a Catholic girlhood in a London convent school in the late 1950s. (Cast 4m, 10f)

This humourous play offers an interesting insight into what life is like for three catholic schoolgirls growing up in London in the late 1950's. The girls, who are all called Mary(!) attend a convent school run by strict Irish nuns. The play follows the adventures of the girls as they get their first boyfriends and worry about committing a dreaded mortal sin! Although the nuns imagine that the girls are mature and quite promiscious, and are offended by the often innocent classroom chatter. It is in fact quite the reverse, with the girls being relatively naive and the nuns panicking about them being being indecent! A wonderful play that is sure to keep the audience engaged, there are six main female parts and four minor, plus four medium sized male parts.

I had to read the play for a recent Drama examination and it really didn't interest me in the slightest.

a truely british play with irish comedy 10 Dec 2002

firstly when i was handed this book from my theatre teacher i was quite daunted by it, how wrong could i have been. I fell in love with mooney and gallegher and mcginty in an instint, and so much that i took on the character of mary gallagher for myself in my practical piece. Nevertheless the comedy arises from the oh-so-funny nuns which bring me back to my old school days. trying to read this play with a straight face is hard acting it is impossible.
You'll love it. 29 Nov 2002

I read this play as a recommendation from my theatre teacher on seeing how Catholics speak, as I was writing a monologue as one. It may not have been useful in that respect, but I'm glad I read it because it's one of the best plays I've read. Definietly very funny at times. My friends sat around as I read bits to them, and they all begged to borrow it afterwards. I don't know how truthful it is of the society it aims to portray, but I'm guessing it's from the author's life. For me it was a look at a culture different very to my own, and a look at these girls' fairly normal teenage lives (similar to mine to an extent) in what they probably think is quite an anal society. I really enjoyed this play, it was very entertaining, and I wonder what it would be like on stage. I'd love to see it, and I'd love even more to be in it! You'll love reading it, for sure.

I needed to do a scene for theatre with my friend Weisi, and I stumbled upon this script and it is the sweetest, funniest script to perform. There are so many really funny parts, that it is so enjoyable to work on! I would really reccomend working on it if you are a theatre student or reading it if you enjoy humerous literature!
