Product Description

There’s a full moon over Los Angeles, and for police psychologist Jamie Beaverbook that can only mean one thing: the crazies will be out in force. But when he is called into the station for a consult in the middle of the night, even the jaded Beaverbrook can’t believe his ears. The innocent-looking girl in the interview room doesn’t look a day over fifteen, yet the cops say Terry Ferriman was discovered in an alley off of Sunset Boulevard, her mouth smeared with blood as she crouched over the body of a man whose throat was torn out. A basic psych evaluation convinces Beaverbrook of Terry’s sanity and yet he can’t ignore the evidence that seems to point in one extraordinary direction. He tells himself he doesn’t believe in vampires, but after some digging, the good doctor begins to realize that the shadows of L.A. conceal a world where girls like Terry never age and where blood is more valuable than gold. Sharp, witty, and deliciously sinister, Once Bitten is a satisfying paranormal thriller from bestselling British author Stephen Leather.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected pleasure... 26 Nov 2010
By Jenni
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book as it was in the Kindle top 100 and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It is not your typical vampire story and gives an interesting alternative to the standard view. I could really see this book being made into a indie type film (low - moderate budget or maybe made-for-TV movie) and the way it is written reminded me very much of Michael Crichton, especially with the extra detail about things that are not necessary for the actual plot but still very interesting and which help me get a better understanding of the lead characters line of work. A good, well thought out plot as well and I especially liked the ending.

Why only 4 stars? At only 250 pages it was too short for me personally, I think the "10 years" period (can't say more than this without spoilers) could have been more detailed which could easily have lengthened the book by another 100 or so pages. But this is simply my personal preference - I like long and detailed books - and the story itself certainly didn't require it and didn't feel rushed in any way.

A word of warning: if you like your books all neatly tied up at the end then you won't enjoy this book's conclusion as it is very much true to life in that there are a lot of questions left unanswered. This could be because the author intends to write a sequel but I suspect what is actually intended is to make you think a bit...

3.0 out of 5 stars Tuck right in 1 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Reason for purchasing: Guess what? This book was another Christmas present! After enjoying Dreamer's Cat by Stephen Leather and The Basement by Stephen Leather, I was not sure what to expect from the cover/title of this book but was more than willing to tuck in.

Setting: Los Angeles.

Storyline: I would not call this book horrific. Mr Leather uses the horror genre in the same way he uses the sci-fi genre in Dreamer's Cat: to give us a different perspective on something that has otherwise been done to death, hence creating an interesting and unusual story that has its roots firmly set in the thriller genre. This time, we become a middle-aged psychiatrist (who is depressed about growing old), working for the LA Police Department, who is nicknamed the Vampire Hunter and Batman, because of the bat mobile style car he drives. Jamie Beaverbrook uses a MacBookPro (more reasons for loving this story!) to run a profiling program he has researched and written and honed over ten years to pick out the crazies from the crimes of passion that occur with breathtaking and depressing rapidity in the city of Angels. He is doing just fine until he has to interview a twenty-five year old valley girl, Terry Ferriman, whom his program categorises as normal but whom his gut tells him there is something special about. He falls in love with her but then discovers all is not as it seems. Bit by bit, he ends up investigating Terry, and uncovers her frightening secrets, whereupon secret X file style government departments get involved and well, who could guess the ending. I certainly could not. Although once finished you will kick yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 14 Nov 2010

I thought this would be just another trendy vampire love story but it was cheap so I gave it a go. What a pleasant surprise! Couldn't put it down. Will certainly look for other books by Stephen Leather now.

I like the idea/concept of vampires being hounded by the government, due to their talents and genetic abnormalities. The book was a little short and the ending a bit abrupt, however that just leaves a door open for a possible sequel. What I didn't like was the over the top torture descriptions used in connection with violence against children. It was only twice and to be fair the parts in question were not long. However I felt personally that this diminished the authors story. Firstly because it was of no real importance to the tale and secondly it read as if it was written with no other reason than to see it on paper.

3.0 out of 5 stars No bite 24 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is an easy read over the Kindle. However, 2 dimensional characters and lack of depth do not raise this book out of the mediocrity belt.

The cops are all stereotypes; the sub-plots and stories are not really explored; characters have no sense of ambition; and there are too many examples of Jamie Beaverbrook (psychologist and vampire hunter) telling us about his computer programme to the nth degree.

However, it is an easy read and at under a £1 was good value, hence the 3 star rating.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing 17 Feb 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book started brilliant, but the end was rubbish. throughout the book i beleived the main character's constant reference to his age and dying was to do with the fact that this was a book about vampires and he was going to become one. i also didnt like his constant descriptions particularly regarding his car. the end was awful, we were just left hanging. what happend to the poor girl was she left forever in that place. this book was the worst book i have ever read, so glad i only paid 70p for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing read
The book was disjointed and vaguely juvenile and the ending was a throw away, as if even the author had become bored with the book.
