Product Description

Product Description

An inspirational read that will take you to one of the last great frontiers, the mighty Mt McKinley, and an expedition that not only challenged a team of British Mountaineers both physically, mentally and morally, but a trip that nearly cost them their lives. This book takes you on a journey through life changing decisions, both on the Mountain, and on Nigel's long road to recovery after sustaining severe frostbite. His steely determination to battle through the aftermath of what can only be described as an epic expedition, put his life back together and go on to enjoy such fantastic Adventures despite his disability is an inspiration to us all. Rob Edmonds - Mountain Spirit Once Bitten is not just another 'climber gets stuck on mountain but survives to tell the tale' book. The gripping accounts of the summit attempt, realisation that something is going horribly wrong and the rescue are all there, but the other half of the book is all about the journey Nigel has made since those events in 1999 - the other mountains he has climbed and his refusal to disappear into the crevasses of self pity and helplessness that appeared along the way. By sharing his experiences he provides food for thought and hopes he can help others. As he says dramatic events may mean expectations have to be moved but they don't have to be lowered. We should all remember that life is for living. Carolyn Budding - Terra Nova Equipment Nigel's story was filmed as part of the 'Alive' series by Darlow Smithson Productions for Channel 4 / Discovery Channel.

From the Author

Once Bitten tells the tory of my fateful climb on Mt. McKinley in May 1999. All seemed to go well until a severe storm at 20,000ft almost froze me and my two climbing friends to death. We escaped by the skin of our teeth and all suffered severe frostbite. I lost my fingers, toes, heels and nose. You may think that would stop me from climbing? Oh No!

The book also covers my recovery from frostbite, how I got back into the worlds great mountain ranges and finally what I learned by living through such an experience.

Are there lessons which could help you?

I picked this book up off our living room table the other night, read a few pages and subsequently found myself still standing there reading it three chapters (and some time!) later. It is a very well written account of a dangerous and almost tragic expedition, followed by a very personal account of the journey back to recovery and the rebuilding of a life.

Nigel's style of writing puts the reader very much in his position - you really can (almost) feel the cold and biting wind of Mount McKinley as you read. There's no "flowering things up" or skirting of painful memories (as far as I can tell). This is an open and honest account of events and I think it is well worth anyone's time to read. The book finishes in a very uplifting and motivating way. I for one hope there IS a follow-up book - perhaps an account of the 7 Peaks challenge that Nigel completed last year?..... I'd certainly buy it!

Nigel Vardy is an inspirational man and has written probably the most captivating and emotionally gripping book I have ever read! Throughout the book you live, breathe and experience the highs and especially the lows of this fateful adventure and can only admire his tenacity and strength of character to recover from such a dramatic and life changing experience.

It is a must have and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I really hope he never has to write a sequel ;-)

Highly recommended 4 Oct 2010

I met the author by chance in the Italian Dolomites shortly before the publication of this book.He was on holiday telemark skiing.Nigel gave a slide show and talk on his experiences on Mt.McKinley and what followed.I made a mental note to buy this book but have only just done so!
It's a fascinating read. The first section of the book deals with the expedition, rescue and recovery;the second with what he has learned from his experiences with regard to the world around him.
The book deserves a better map than the one on page 5 and in the text several minor errors escaped the proof reader.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it highly.
