Product Description

Album Description

Joby Talbot is the composer in residence for Classic FM and this is his first album released as a result of fantastic responses from listeners. He has worked with artists including Travis, Paul McCartney and Tom Jones and was part of the pop phenomenon, The Divine Comedy in the early 90s. This album is a collection of superb contemporary, smooth, chillout tracks beautifully composed to relax to and enjoy. He has also just completed creating the soundtrack for the new movie The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

... and once more... 14 Sep 2005
Format:Audio CD
I picked up this album after seeing the Joby Talbot Band play live at Queen Elizabeth Hall in July 2005. Was really impressed with the concert and have to say, I am thoroughly enjoying the CD as well.

Joby wrote a short piece for each month during 2004 as part of his stint as Classic FM's Composer in Residence. The works that have resulted have a tremendously diverse target audience. Part of the people who will love this will be fans of Joby from his days at Divine Comedy. There will be some who know Joby as a film composer and then others who discovered him on the airwaves at Classic FM.

Each of the pieces are scored for a small ensemble, using any of the combination of piano, violin, cello, percussion and harp. They feel very fresh and vibrant in their textures due to these restrictions but are harmonically accessible to all due to his background in popular and film music.

My personal highlights on the disc are April's track "The First Day of Summer" and September's "The Last Day of Summer" for their playful nature and the more sombre "Artic Circle" for timbre and fantastic percussion lines. Everton Nelson's playing of "Eleven", the track for November takes the listener to a world of J.S. Bach in terms of its figuration but the harmonic structure are certainly more modern than that

This CD to me has a variety of functions: it educates those more familiar with popular genres into the world of classical music and also takes those who like their classical works to a new genre leaving behind the chamber pieces of Beethoven and Mozart but retaining the sounds of the instruments they find recognisable. Either way, a broadening musical process is inevitable.

A fine collection 31 Dec 2010

I knew about Joby's work from his time with the Divine Comedy and was intrigued when I heard a track off this album on the radio. I prompty bought the album and can highly recommend it. Very atmospheric and evocative of the different seasons of the year.

I decided to buy this album on the strength of hearing only one piece of music ( August) recently on a late night radio station (Lyric FM's 'Blue of the Night').Prior to this I had no idea who Joby Talbot was.The album contains 12 tracks ,each of which is a piece corresponding to an individual month of the year. Also included are 3 bonus tracks which actually pre date the main collection of songs. This totally instrumental album lasts roughly 72 minutes in total ,with the bonus tracks making up 25 minutes of this total. There are informative notes included that detail Joby's particular inspirations for each piece as well as interesting details concerning the writing processes and circumstances linked to each piece of music.Regarding the 12 tracks that make up the original album ,there are no weak links .My favourite pieces are 'March(seed capsule)' , 'May (cumulonimbus)' ,'June (transit of Venus) ' ,'August(cloudpark)'and 'December(polarisation)'.Let me tell you that the bonus tracks are every bit as excellent as the best of the main songs and are in a similar vein musically . They also use similar instrumentation. All of the tracks were written by Joby and he plays piano throughout. The other instruments are violin(Everton Nelson),cello (Chris Worsey) ,percussion(Rob Farrer)and Harp(Manon Morris).I am pleased that I purchased this delightful album ,full of moods and changing atmospheres and sentiments, and I consider it to be a hidden gem . Why don't you give it a listen for yourself ?
