This is one of the classic prog rock albums of the seventies. To many who followed BJH in the early part of their career, the time on the Harvest label was very special, particularly the first three albums. And of those three albums, this one is the shining jewel. I can still recall buying the vinyl version and hearing John Lees' soaring guitar on the start of the opening track 'She Said' and being blown away. There is not a poor track on the album and it sounds as fresh today as it did forty years ago.
This version is beautifully presented; the bonus tracks show how the band were developing and experimenting, and the evolution of the classic Mocking Bird in particular is highlighted. The unedited version of Song For Dying is a welcome addition too. The second disc with the original analogue master, quadrophonic mix and surround sound mix is very interesting and shows how much care has been put into this release. Sound quality throughout is superb.
It is very sad that this release is clouded by the sad and untimely death of Woolly Wolstenholme who was such an important part of the BJH sound and made a mighty contribution to this album.
Highly recommended.
