Product Description

Garry (Douglas) Kilworth is a varied and prolific writer who has travelled widely since childhood, living in a number of countries, especially in the Far East. His books include science fiction and fantasy, historical novels, literary novels, short story collections, children's books and film novelisations. This autobiography contains anecdotes about his farm worker antecedents and his rovings around the globe, as well as his experiences in the middle list of many publishing houses. The style is chatty, the structure loose - pole vaulting time and space on occasion - and the whole saga is an entertaining ramble through a 1950s childhood, foreign climes and the genre corridors of the literary world.

Kilworth is a master of his trade. (Punch)

Garry Kilworth is arguably the finest writer of short fiction today, in any genre. (New Scientist)

Kilworth is one of the most significant writers in the English language. (Fear)

Garry Kilworth was born in Yorkshire, but lost his northern accent a long time ago. He now lives in Suffolk with his wife Annette close to a beautiful lake and open countryside. He has been an author now for nearly 40 years and has 80 novels and collections of stories published. Garry's main interests are travelling the globe and photographing wildlife, mostly in the Far East, Australia and Polynesia. Previous to his writing career he was a telegraphist with the RAF for 18 years and then 8 years with an international telecoms company.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to write a biography 19 Jan 2013

I purchased this book because I served with the author for Eighteen months when we were just young lads doing our Boy Entrant training in the Royal Air Force during the mid 1950s. He covers this episode of his life in some detail and it was this part of the book that was of most interest to me. But for anyone who is considering writing about their life to pass on to family they could do a lot worse that read Garry's book , as in my opinion he shows just how a biography should be written. He also shows that having had in his own words a poor education just what can be achieved through sheer determination and hard work. His book also encouraged me to read some of the classic stories and listen to different styles of music that I have with regret sadly neglected during my lifetime. The descriptions of his visits and adventures to many countries brings a virtual travelogue to the reader.

I loved this book, it tells me about a time just before I can recall, a time when British society changed at break neck speed, a time before foreign holidays when the majority were paid weekly and hadn't a bank account.
A society that was far less mobile than the one I knew and a good way to achieve physical and mental freedom was joining the services.
Garry takes you by the hand and leads you from school to school posting to posting describing his friends family and aquaintances with poignant affection never looking back in anger but assessing their foibles through the mores and attitudes of the times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just.....loved it! 13 Jan 2013

I'll be honest - I bought this because I know Garry. And I like him, and his books. But I am no sycophant. If I hadn't loved this book I would not have left a review.

it's lovely, gentle, a great read!

And the first chapter - the floods at Felixstowe - it made me cry! Nothing dreadful or dramatic, but a tragedy seen through the eyes of a child who saw it as an adventure.

Would I recommend it to friends - YES!!!!!
