Product Description

On Wings of Eagles is the account of an incredible rescue by a Green Beret colonel and a group of corporate executives hastily trained into a fighting team. When Ross Perot, millionaire head of the Dallas-based company EDS, discovered that two of his key men in Iran had been jailed, he turned to the one man in America who could help. Colonel ‘Bull’ Simons, famed World War II and Vietnam commando, agreed to do what the US government could not – go in and get the men out. This is the stuff of Follet’s fiction – a secret penetration into a dangerous territory; a dramatic jailbreak; a harrowing overland escape to the Turkish border – and all the more extraordinary because it is fact.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Non-Fiction I really enjoyed 18 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have read many of Ken Follet's books and count him as one of my favourite authors. On Wings of Eagles is a real story about a rescue mission of 2 American businessmen who have been looked up in an Iranian jail. The story is quite dramatized, but I still think it works and captures the reader as this has been written as a novel. Overall I would categories this book as a very good book, as it is fun to read, it captures you that it is hard to stop and in addition you learn about the political situation during this time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good piece of non-fiction. 10 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It was only when I read Ross Perot's name that I realised this was an actual historical event. Exciting plot turns are not the order of the day here; more, we're led to admire the amazing bravery and camaraderie of a group of businessmen who are stuck in an almost impossible situation and who never give up the fight for freedom.

3.0 out of 5 stars Iran hostages 26 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a very detailed explanation of what happened to some American business men in Iran during the revolution in the late seventies, I would imagine it was a difficult book to write as the author seems only to have access to the American side of the story. It is difficult to imagine what these men's families must have gone through.

4.0 out of 5 stars On Wings of Angels 24 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although I enjoyed the true tale, nevertheless I did feel that Ken Follett made a rather a long winded and drawn out version of the tale.

A thoroughly interesting and fascinating read that kept you on the edge of your seat. To think that this was based on a true story is, to say the least, an alarming insight into some of the petty, war like areas of our world. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, the plot takes another nerve wracking twist that leaves the reader guessing right to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars PUBLISHERS REVIEW [From The Dust Jacket Flaps] 14 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
I believe that most readers choose a book from the publisher's advertisements, [eye catching, illustrated dust jackets / the publishers review(s) on the jacket flaps]. FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, I HAVE SUUPLIED A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE BOOK, AND HERE IS WHAT THE JACKET FLAPS STATE:

*************************************************************************

Among thousands of people imperilled by the Iranian Revolution of 1979, two men in special danger were senior executives of the Electronic Data Systems Corporation of Texas, under contract to the Shah's government to build a nationwide social security network from scratch. They were arrested on trumped up charges of bribery and corruption, thrown into jail, and left to wonder what the arbitrary sentence of the Revolution would be.

But what the American's insiduious and seemingly omnipresent persecutor Dadgar did not reckon with was the force of character of Ross Perot, the Texan head of EDS, and the loyalty of the men who surrounded him. By tenacity, resolution and the ability to inspire others, Perot had built EDS into a multi-billion dollar corporation and himself into one of the most successful men in the story of American capitalism. These resources, human and financial, he put behind a project to get his men out of Iran - legally if possible, illegally if not.

'On Wings of Eagles' is the story how that challenge drew out of a group of quite ordinary men - Perot's employees - quite extraordinary qualities; of how they attempted to counter the terrifying uncertainties of the Islamic holy war against Westerners with little more than determination and the leadership of a legendary US Army Colonel.
