Oregonian 20040609 The principles of planting that the rest of us follow had been consigned to the dustbin. Instead, Wiley was looking directly to the wild and recreating ... the mingled communities of plants he saw there. In the process he set out evermore seductive and convincing arguments for a radical new approach to gardening, as described in his long-awaited book, On the Wild Side. As he writes in the book: 'This is seat of your pants gardening ... hold on to your hats.' Product Description

Inspired first by the flora and fauna of rural England, and later by the world?s deserts, coastlines, mountains, and woodlands, Keith Wiley has distilled the essence of these wild landscapes into a single garden with breathtaking success. Much more than a book of new planting ideas, On the Wild Side challenges our whole understanding of what a garden is. Why strive for year-round color throughout the garden when small areas can seize the limelight at their seasonal peak? Change and evolution is at the heart of new naturalism?is your garden ready for it?

By S. Dawe
Format:Hardcover
This book takes the reader on a journey, from the Somerset hedgerows of the author's youth, to a magnificient Garden on the edge of Dartmoor, stopping off on the way to visit Alpine meadows, the Fynbos in South Africa, the Lake District, and American prairies. On the journey you discover a new way of gardening, inspired by vast landscapes but easily transferable to any garden space. You also discover that a naturalistic style of planting doesn't mean that you need to have a garden full of nettles.

The recurring theme of this very readable book is the Garden House in Devon, which I first visited 20 years ago and is where the author began to experiment with garden settings inspired by wild landscapes.

I used to think that nothing could be better than the Cottage Garden at the Garden House in early summer, however the journey hasn't ended yet as Keith is now developing his own garden "Wildside" - I await the next book!

After reading this book I will never again be ashamed of my wild looking garden. Gardens which look the same year after year should be considered old fashioned. Give me a garden full of surprises which evolves and changes. This book will inspire you to look to nature for ideas. Nature doesn't use a rule book and neither should we. Having visited the Garden House many years ago, I know understand how Keith has created a natural, wild garden in harmony with its surroundings. Full of wonderful photographs and stories about his horticultural wanderings, this is a book which you will return to again and again. Be reasured Keith, those pounds you gained whilst writing were well worth it!
