Book Description

6 Sep 2007 Bar Cynster (Book 9)

Where are all the exciting men in London? After spending years in the glittering ballrooms of the town, Amanda Cynster is utterly bored by the current crop of bland suitors. Determined to take matters into her own hands, one night she shockingly goes where no respectable lady ever should, but where many an intriguing gentleman might be found. But titillating excitement quickly turns to panic when Amanda discovers she's quite out of her depth. She looks around for help - and is unexpectedly rescued by the Earl of Dexter. Lean, sensuous, and mysterious, he has delayed re-entering society, preferring instead a more interesting existence on its fringes.

He's the epitome of the boldly passionate gentleman Amanda has been searching for, but although his very touch makes it clear he's willing to educate her in the art of love, Amanda has to wonder if such a masterful rake can be sufficiently tamed into the ways of marriage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good - But could have been better 30 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the 7th book in Laurens' series about the Cynsters. IMV the best books have been Devil's Bride and All About Love. This book features Amanda Cynster, one of the twin cousins of the Bar Cynster, and her search for a suitable husband. Having exhausted her options among the eligible members of the ton she decided to look among the non-eligible, i.e. the members of the demi monde. Needless to say she does find the perfect candidate and the book is about how she persuades him to marry her.
The good aspects of this book are the hero, who is quite nice, and that the murder mystery does not take up too much of the book.
The not so good aspects are that the other Cynsters do not feature as heavily as I would have liked and that the murder mystery is very much tagged on. IMV it should either have been left out alltogether or been more meaty.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a Wild Book 30 Aug 2007
Format:Paperback
This was the very first book I read of Miss Laurens, and I was stuck to every page. Since I bought this book I got addicted to her writing and bought millions since. On a wild Night partner to On a wild Dawn is the story of Lady Amanda Cynster who is utterly bored by the current crop of colorless suitors. Determined to take matters into her own hands, one night she shockingly goes where no respectable lady ever should, but where many an intriguing gentleman might be found.

But titillating excitement quickly turns to panic when Amanda discovers she's quite out of her depth. She looks around for help -- and is unexpectedly rescued by the Earl of Dexter. Lean, sensuous, and mysterious, he has delayed re-entering society, preferring instead a more interesting existence on its fringes.

He's the boldly passionate gentleman Amanda has been searching for, but although his very touch makes it clear he's willing to educate her in the art of love, Amanda has to wonder if such a masterful, lionized rake can be sufficiently tamed into the ways of marriage and find out why such a man is living on the fringes in the fisrt place.

Yes this plot may sound dull but trust me it hides some very interesting and book gripping plots read it, it doesn't disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laurens has produced the goods yet again 23 April 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is about the Cynster twin Amanda and how she plots to catch a man like her cousins. The plan is to appear in the more shocking places in order to bring out the possesive streak in her chosen man. If you are a fan of Stephanie Laurens this one is a must, not easy to put down and has plenty of erotic scenes written as only Laurens can.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lather, Rinse and Repeat but still decent 19 Jan 2008
By Snowy
Format:Paperback
All the Cynster books are exactly the same: Dashing, Oh so scandalous Cynster is determined never to marry anyone but meets "unique, independent" girl immediately declares he will marry her for no reason at all and spends the rest of the book trying to get her to agree whilst sleeping with her, despite the fact that he usually only realises he's actually in love with her near the end.

I did have hopes that this book featuring a Lady Cynster as the main character would break the mould a little, but no. Dexter is pretty much a Cynster with a different name, right down to their habit of being totally posessive of their potential future wives and steamrollering any and all discussion with her, without having an actual reason for wanting to marry her other than he just does and the sex. Though I did enjoy the "Bar Cynster vs Dexter" scene it didn't exactly ring true that they'd be so encouraging with continued assignations.

Amanda Cynster came out of this somewhat annoyingly, half scheming shrew, half naive nitwit. Things started out interestingly when she appears to want to explore the wilder side of life but quickly turns into a traditional Laurens heroine. She spends half the book stalking him in an effort to get him to propose and when he does she refuses for reasons that aren't that much more scandalous than have happened in many of the other books in this series.

As for the "Mystery scandal". I guessed the culprit right away and I suck at whodunits, exactly the same guy as in most of the other ones. Can't the villain sometimes be someone else other than the "respectable" member of the families?

This book is much better than it's "twin", there isn't a (boring!) 10 page sex scene quite so often and you can feel their connection more than many Laurens h/h sexcapades. Amanda is also a slightly more interesting character than Amelia. Worth a read if you like Cynster novels but they are certainly not improving as the series goes on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow moving, dull and quite a dread to read 11 May 2004
By R. Wong
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Much as I'd like to give thumbs up for another story of the Cynster family, this one has got to take the cake for being the dullest.
The plot is rather thin - it starts out with Amanda Cynster determined to catch the Earl of Dexter, so she seeks him out in all the notorious joints that no respectable lady should be seen in. That should sound interesting, if not for the fact, it drags on and on and on... and the hero, Martin Dexter just ends up acting like a dog on a leash - rather in Ms Cynster's control.
So, this should sprout good news for feminists, right? Nah!!! We want to read about feisty females, with spirited characters - not women who like to indulge in power-play, feminine wiles, and sad to say, Amanda Cynster strikes me as manipulative, spoilt, and acts rather much like a woman of ill-repute, despite her 'tender' years.
I can live with brave heroines who like to tackle problems head on, but it gets boring if she tugs and he follows. No tension. No twists.
The story only truly picks up towards the last 50 or so pages... when Dexter comes alive, and stops languishing away in the land of the living dead.
This is so far the worst Stephanie Laurens book I've read. And I confess it took me nearly 4 days to finish it. Which is a feat..because I usually gobble up romances in a day. It was too slow moving, and I had to put it down so many times. Agonizing to finish.
