Book Description

22 Nov 2002
During Lent, many make an annual journey through the stages of Christ's road to Calvary. Following in his footsteps takes us through events of both joy and pain - and which of us has not wished that we could have alleviated some of the horror of the cross or alerted him to the dangers of his God-directed path? If only we could travel back in time to his side, we imagine that perhaps we could help, with the wisdom of hindsight. This book follows the path of a character first met in Hilary's Advent book "On the Way to Bethlehem". Although rooted in the 21st century, the 'traveller' journeys alongside Jesus to the cross and beyond to the joy of an empty tomb, in the company of many Bible characters. Her discoveries sometimes astound her, sometimes empower her, but always challenge her to learn lessons for life today. With her, we can encounter the power of Calvary at first hand, ensuring that our lives are never the same again.

Nice, bite-sized chunks of the journey to Calvary from the point-of-view of a 21st Century traveller going back in time to when Christ was on the earth, starting with the temptations in the wilderness. Reminders of Christ's journey are cleverly linked to relevancy for today and each short chapter finishes in prayer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A personal journey with Christ to Calvary 12 Feb 2013
By Skylark - Published on
An amazing little book, drawing on the gospel accounts to provide a readable narrative of Jesus' journey to Calvary, through the eyes of a bystander. Events are of course familiar from the Bible accounts, but somehow Ms McDowell manages to make this an intensely personal account of watching Jesus go to the cross.
I have read this book every Lent for several years now, and find it invaluable in renewing and rededicating my journey with the Lord. Can't recommend it enough.
Just a shame its not readily available in the US, has to be a UK import : (
