This is a fantastic book. Be prepared for a lot of reading! It's not a book that tells you how to write, but Fred Karlin has taken every situation in film scoring and talked to composers with different approaches, and the books shows you several ways to handle every kind of situation. It encourages you to study the situations discussed, so you can see for yourself. It's filled with great knowlegde and a lot of score excerpts! This is not a good book, if you don't know anything about scoring, or if you haven't read other books. I would suggest Richard Davis' book about film music. On The Track takes you to the advanced level. It's got appendixes with lots of great technical exercises and creative ones too.
