Review

'A stupendous book that doesn't scant in offering details about the complex world of the music composition for movies ... It is obligatory reading for the composer that wants to enter the wonderful world of filmscoring.' – Audiomidilab, Community of Music Technology

Product Description

On the Track offers a comprehensive guide to scoring for film and television. Covering all styles and genres, the authors, both noted film composers, cover everything from the nuts-and-bolts of timing, cuing, and recording through balancing the composer's aesthetic vision with the needs of the film itself. Unlike other books that are aimed at the person "dreaming" of a career, this is truly a guide that can be used by everyone from students to technically sophisticated professionals. It contains over 100 interviews with noted composers, illustrating the many technical points made through the text.

This is a fantastic book. Be prepared for a lot of reading! It's not a book that tells you how to write, but Fred Karlin has taken every situation in film scoring and talked to composers with different approaches, and the books shows you several ways to handle every kind of situation. It encourages you to study the situations discussed, so you can see for yourself. It's filled with great knowlegde and a lot of score excerpts! This is not a good book, if you don't know anything about scoring, or if you haven't read other books. I would suggest Richard Davis' book about film music. On The Track takes you to the advanced level. It's got appendixes with lots of great technical exercises and creative ones too.

This text is massively comprehensive and exceptionally detailed.

If you are remotely interested in the process of film or TV scoring you should own this book at least!

Highly recommended.

One of the best 19 Jan 2012

On the track is one of the most completed guide for film music composing; it has several examples taken from movies but one of the most important feature I've seen is that all topics are linked with practice, not only theoretic words. This from the very first page. I highly recommend this book.
