Book Description

By the son and daughter of Henry Hill - immortalised in the book Wiseguy and the Martin Scorsese film Goodfellas - On The Run is the harrowing true story of a childhood spent coping with an explosive father whilst dodging Mafia payback.

Henry Hill's business partner, Jimmy Burke, has disposed of every person who could possibly implicate him in the infamous Lufthansa robbery at JFK airport. On his way to prison, lifelong gangster Henry is given two options: sleep with the fishes, or enter the FBI's Witness Protection Program.

Gregg and Gina are dragged along for the ride, becoming two of the first children ever placed under witness protection. Like nomads, they're forced to wander from state to state, constantly inventing new names and finding new friends, only to abandon them at a moment's notice. They spent their childhood living under constant fear of being found and killed in an act of merciless Mafia revenge.

But Henry, the rock Gregg and Gina so desperately need, is a heavy cocaine user, trapped within the criminal life of a Mafioso. He is soon up to his old tricks and consistently putting his children's identities in jeopardy. And so it continues until the kids, now almost adults, can no longer ignore the possibility that the Mafia might be less of a threat to them than remaining under the roof of their increasingly unbalanced father.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, emotional and haunting 27 Mar. 2005
As i'd started this book i knew nothing of Henry Hill or who he was.
I straight away liked the style of how its written by both Gregg and Gina but split into sections.
I was then hooked with the story as the children grew up and their fathers route of abuse towards them and their mother and eventually self distruction.
A must read for anyone interested in the Mafia or anyone who enjoys reading people over coming childhood traumas.
Read this book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rollercoaster ride of a read! 1 Feb. 2006
By A Customer
I was bought this book as a present - I don't think I would have chosen to buy it myself as I don't usually go for biographies. And on reading the back cover I wasn't sure if I would really enjoy the book, but I soon changed my mind!
I was surprised at the way the book really drew me in right from the beginning and I found myself unable to put the book down, wanting and even needing to know how the lives of the two young people would turn out in the end.
In some ways this book was like a good crime thriller, only from the pespective of the authors - children at the time of the events. The fact that all the things in the book actually happened and the people were real, meant I was rooting for the children in a way I wouldn't have for fictional characters.
There are some highs and lows in the book but I think largely the lives of these children was about making the best of the bad times. It was amazing to see how resilient and adaptable people can be when they have to, these children were put through so much from a young age. It was also very interesting to find how different the brother and sister's memories or views were towards the same things, maybe partly due to their age difference.
I found this book unputdownable, therefore I think it deserves 5 stars!

I couldn't put this book down. It was definitely a very interesting read. A great insight into life in a mafia family. Made me feel terribly sorry for the kids. Nevertheless a great read. I would recommend for anyone interested in learning about the mafia or Henry Hill.
