Product Description

Learn what your dog is really telling you. According to International dog trainer Turid Rugaas, dogs have about 30 calming signals, perhaps even more. Some of these signals are used by most dogs, while other dogs have an incredibly rich ´vocabulary´. It varies from dog to dog. Turid Rugaas goes into detail about the language of dogs so that we can understand what our dogs are telling us and build a relationship based on trust and respect.

It is a huge help to understand our dogs and communicate with them in their language.
Often people claim the dog bit out of the blue - but that is rarely the case. They do show when they are uncomfortable in a situation, when they get stressed and fearful but if those signs are ignored biting is their last option of saying "Back off I can't cope". If everyone would be able to read the early signs we would all have a better understanding and a lot of bites could be prevented.

I read an article online on calming signals by Turid Rugaas, so I decided to order the book. I was a bit disappointed hence the 3 stars as I expected that the book would cover the subject more in depth than the article, which the book does not really do. The book covers the same calming signals as the article does, which is around only 8 calming signals out of the 30 a dog can use. I was particularly interested in the 'smiling' calming signal and looking forward to Turid Rugaas explaining the difference between a 'smiling' calming signal and fear aggression curling lips which are quite similar, but nothing. I did not really learn anything I did not already know, but I am doing a Dog Behaviour Course. However the book would be useful for a layperson and case histories are included in the book.

Such an interesting book and had me checking out the dogs in my life looking for those calming signals and seeing them especially in their interactions with other dogs. Fascinating. A great book for understanding our four legged friends.

A simple read, a bit repetitive but ideas worth trying if you have a rescue dog like mine that is giving stress signals
