Great intro to Powers' work 2 Jun 2011

If you haven't read Tim Powers and are just discovering him due to the new Disney movie, you're in for a real treat.

Keep in mind, this was written before the movies were made, and while it has pirates, supernatural elements, and the fountain of youth as plot points, it does not follow the movie storyline.

By the way, that's a good thing. Movie was fun, this book is fantastic. Enjoy your foray into Tim Powers' work, just be prepared to spend the next several months plowing through the rest of his books, too!

read the book before you see the movie 10 Jun 2011

"ON STRANGER TIDES" - One of the greatest historical fantasy book of all time, by Tim Powers, written twenty+ years back. Tim Powers specializes in books taking historical characters and historical events and giving them a weird spin, weaving into the fantasy and the occult elements. Blackbeard, voodoo, raising the dead, pirates doing Calculus, what was his name, Pawn Say, Kingston harbor falls into the sea, the search for the Fountain of Youth, etc.

By all means, READ the BOOK FIRST.

An OK movie by Disney/ Johnny Depp standards, the movie is very much watered down, predictable version of maybe 20% the book. Johnny Depp buckling swashes, fights, violence with little motivation. Summer fare. Much of the explanation for what is going on (and why) is left out of the movie and only the action scenes are left in. If you liked the other Pirates of the Caribbean movies, this movie is very much the same and you won't be disappointed. But if you HAVE read the book, (and I loved the book), don't go to the theater expecting to see it.

Ian McShane (Deadwood) plays a convincing magician Blackbeard, with burning hemp in his beard. Keith Richards (of the Rolling Stones) makes a guest appearance, as, who else, Capt Jack Sparrow's father! Why is Blackbeard doing voodoo?, why did Kingston (Jamaica) harbor sink into the sea?, why do pirates do calculus? who is Pawn Say? You'll have to read the book.

BTW, Tim Powers historical occult fantasies, all of them, always use real historical characters and real historical dates and events, in their historical sequence.
Fearfully wonderful! 6 April 2012

This was my first Tim Powers book - generally a little too much to the horror side for me but he is such a great writer you just don't care. What a roller coaster of a ride this book takes you on! I reread it after seeing the first "pirates" movie and being convinced they ripped him off - which I guess is why they used his title in a later movie.
So, just view it as something separate and wonderful and you will not be even a little bit disappointed!
