Review

'Dervla Murphy is the best kind of traveller: observant, high-spirited, open-minded, and impervious to discomfort, and Rachel is a honey ! Their keen appreciation of India's natural beauty makes the tiny province of Coorg appear as an earthly paradise' -- Sunday Telegraph 'Here is a new vision of the sub-continent' -- Times Literary Supplement 'Dervla Murphy spans the wide range of sensation of India, where moments of great happiness come hard upon frustration and stench' -- Guardian 'This is a charming book, bringing to immediate life the beautiful landscapes and friendly people of a little-known part of the sub-continent' -- Geographical Journal 'A travel writer of rare heart and freshness ! time in Asia has opened her eyes; it has not closed her heart to the romance of fresh places and faces' -- Observer 'Vividly she records the harshness of Indian peasant life, the beauty of the countryside, the warmth and spontaneity of the Indian people' -- Lady 'This is a book that makes one realise how much of the real quality of life we in the West have lost' -- Daily Telegraph --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

From Bombay to the hippy beaches of Goa and on to the tropical trip of India, travelling by boat and bus, staying in fisherman's huts and no-star hotels, Dervla Murphy and her five-year-old daughter explored the south. En route they fell in love with the tiny mountain paradise of Coorg, whose landscapes and people form the focus of a wonderfully evocative travel diary. This is an account of their journey. The author also wrote "In Cameroon with Egbert", "The Waiting Land" and "Muddling through in Madagascar". --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is an enjoyable read as Murphy explores one of the less frequently visited parts of India. Making light of travelling with her young daughter, Murphy still seeks out the exotic and unusual experiences that make this account of the meandering journey so readable. Murphy is at her best when describing the various landscapes through which she is travelling, whether it is the lush hinterland, the surrounding mountains or a vivid coastal sunset. Her natural disposition makes the conversations with local people vibrant and intriging, as all of her experiences are revealed to us, good or bad. Finally, the historical and cultural backgrounds are dealt with quickly and succinctly, leaving the reader time to savour the gentle journeying around a most interesting part of the sub-continent. Murphy's writing is still fresh and relevant today. A gem of a book.

Good Read 21 Feb 2003
Format:Paperback
The book has a special significance for me as i am from coorg. The places and even some people are familiar. The place is still as lovely as the author describes. Written in the casual style of an observant traveller as she traverses from history to culture to hilarity, the book takes you on a wonderful and insightful journey. Although I must admit that some of her observations of the indian character and behavior are typical of certain groups only. Still a wonderful and courageous journey

Dervla Murphy is one of the great travel writers - she travels with few belongings, she gets to know the locals, she's easy-going, adventurous and takes everything in her stride. And, her words paint a wonderful picture. In this book she describes her travels through southern India, however there's an added dimension because she's travelling with her five year old daughter. Dervla certainly doesn't constrain her daughter at all, with the result that both of them become totally immersed in the Indian way of life. I almost felt I was travelling with them as they experienced all the frustrations, the joys, the beauty and the fascination of this part of the world.
