Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

On Returning is a 31-track compilation drawn from the three albums (Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, 154) that Wire recorded for EMI in the late 1970s. Though it can certainly be argued that their best work was another decade away, in the shape of the sublime singles "Kidney Bingos" and "Eardrum Buzz", it is the songs collected here for which Wire will be remembered. Though a lot of this stuff now sounds as slapdash and amateurish as it doubtless was, their influence is extraordinarily pervasive. One song here ("Strange") was covered by REM, another ("Outdoor Miner") by Lush and two others ("Three Girl Rhumba", "I Am The Fly") were very liberally borrowed from by Elastica as the basis for their two best singles (respectively, "Connection" and "Line Up"). Wire were the logical end of punk's attempt to reduce rock & roll to its fundamentals. There are no luxuries here: every one of these terse, abrupt songs is shorn of extraneous instrumentation and arrangement (and, it must be said far too often, tunes). These recordings are probably best thought of as something to be learned from rather than enjoyed, but are nonetheless worth having for that. --Andrew Mueller

Format: Audio CD
Wire has recently re-released re-mastered versions of their first three hot streak albums "Pink Flag". "Chairs Missing" and "154", three albums of such fractured brilliance that the band promptly split up, claiming their creative juices had run dry. Subsequent reformations have put that theory to the sword but this was a band who was post punk before punk had a post, jumping from the angular edgy bursts of "Pink Flag" to the artier electronic "Chairs Missing" to the even more abstract surfaces of "154" while barely pausing for breath.

Anyone should really ascribe to owning all those albums but for those lacking the finances this is a sound option with is budget price and 31 tracks. As is always the case with these kinds of compilations there are glaring omissions .Why no "Heartbeat "or "Mannequin"? But overall a more than competent job has been done of encapsulating their musical progression and oeuvre.

What is often overlooked about Wire is their instinctive grasp of pop dynamics. "Outdoor Miner" is essentially a tremendous pop song, though it is a tremendous pop song with a blue /black seam of poignancy coursing through it. "Three Girl Rhumba" s cocky riff was ripped off by Elastica, while "Strange "was covered by R.E.M.. Personal favourite is "I Am The Fly" where the guitar sounds like some colossal machine scouring great chunks out of the earth.

Anyone reading this should really be buying the aforementioned albums, if they haven't already but "On Returning" is a more convenient, cheaper option well worth considering for those unsure about diving too readily into the bands past. And even though they have since re-formed and put out more quality material, they are an object lesson to every other band out there, that they should just walk away if the inspiration wanes and things just don't feel right anymore.

At one point a band called Wire existed; at another a band called Wire existed. The two were the same band and totally different...I knew the mid-80's second model on Mute: a messy synth perfection: 'Kidney Bingos', 'Eardrum Buzz', "A Serious of Snakes", 'Ahead'...I had 'Document' by a then cultish band REM- which featured the rather great 'Strange' (included here). Who were Wire and why is Robert Gotobed?...Harvest issued this compilation in 1989- and it is as good as the 'Boy Child' collection of Scott Walker. Both are ideal introductions (and remember there was a time when 'Pink Flag', 'Chair's Missing' & '154' were not on CD!!!!). So, here 31 tracks from a past Wire had seemed to disown and would prove HIGHLY influential in years to come...The best of 'Pink Flag' is here: 'Feeling Called Love', 'Ex Lion Tamer' and the awseome thrash of '12XU' (which is as good as anything on 'Spiral Scratch'). 'Three Girl Rhumba' will be familiar to Elastica fans, while 'Lowdown' pointed to darker climes. Which is where the oblique 'Reuteurs' resides- sitting next to other disconnected post-punks Joy Division, Pere Ubu, PIL, Gang of Four, Talking Heads, Only Ones...Plus, all the 'Pink Flag' tracks were short. Some over in seconds...The single 'I am the Fly' changed the Wire sound to another angle: Captain Beefheart's twisted world view is close. The 'Chairs Missing' tracks are a transition, a little too deliberate attempt to wrongfoot their audience (and move from the panto that punk became. Hello Sham 69). The best is here: 'Dot Dash', 'French Film Blurred' and 'Another the letter'. And a gem called 'Outdoor Miner'- as good as any popsong by The Beatles/Kinks/XTC/Squeeze (and was massacred by Lush).Read more ›

Wire are one of those influence bands that are more often heard in spirit on
other people's records rather than in the digital flesh of their own. They
were in the vanguard of the UK post-punk scene and as Watford Art College
students, offered an arty spin on the original punk style comparable only to
the magnificent XTC. This budget collection offers an excellent choice from
their first three albums, but be warned - although advertised as a 2000
release it is in fact from 1989 and has the inferior sound quality of first
generation sound transfers. Until they issue this with the new versions, you
may find that the remaster of their first album 'Pink Flag' offers a better
introduction.
