Review

"The exquisite reproduction make this a delightful introduction to the origins of his work." Amateur Photographer "... before any of them came Andre Kertesz." The Independent on Sunday"

Product Description

Andre Kertesz (1894-1985) was one of the most inventive, influential and prolific photographers in the medium's history. This small volume, first published in 1971, became one of his signature works. Taken between 1920 and 1970, these photographs capture people reading in many parts of the world. Readers in every conceivable place - on rooftops, in public parks, on crowded streets, waiting in the wings of the school play - are caught in a deeply personal, yet universal, moment. Kertesz's images celebrate the absorptive power and pleasure of this solitary activity and speak to readers everywhere. Both playful and poetic, "On Reading" is reissued with striking new duotone reproductions. Fans of photography and literature alike will welcome this classic.

Just what it is 10 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is a lovely little book. It's oly short and the subject matter is simple, but it captures something of the fascination and hold books have over us. people lost in there book as they walk along the street. The reproduction is also excellent. Recommended.

I bought this book after seeing an exhibition featuring originals of many of the photos it contains. The photos are a fascinating insight into many decades of people of all walks absorbed in reading in different situations. I recognize my own desire to snatch some reading time in these pictures. I have several other books of Andre Kertesz's photos, but this is my favorite.

A Little Gem 12 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
I first came across this work at a recent exhibition in London but didn't buy the book at the time. I am glad that I now have has this is a remarkable collection of photographs spanning decades and all portraying the subject of reading. The theme sounds simple but it doesn't take long to realise why such a collection took so long to put together - there is such a wide and diverse area that can encapsulate the concept. Kertesz does this with a sharp eye and a passion that comes through in every picture, often forcing the viewer to look for where the theme is. Rarely has a work on a single subject captured so much interest in such a way.
