On The Radio is a brilliant collection of Donna Summer’s greatest hits from the middle to the late 1970s. As such it’s a mix of classic dance tracks and beautiful ballads. Amongst the former, my favourites include the much re-released and remixed I Feel Love - the hypnotic pioneering synth-pop masterpiece, plus the breathtaking MacArthur Park, the rock-influenced Hot Stuff and Bad Girls plus Sunset People and Our Love from the Bad Girls album. Her early albums are also well represented with the tracks Love To Love You Baby, Try Me and I Remember Yesterday, one of her best loved ballads. The album concludes with No More Tears, her powerful duet with Barbra Streisand, and an extended version of On The Radio. It’s a perfect showcase of Donna’s versatility and contains all the chart hits from that era, but is by no means the full story on Donna Summer, who continued to make music throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Good music ages well, and this collection is proof.

If like me you find the reviews of cds on the net useful. Then this is for you. One of the problems an artist like Ms summer has is that there are so many compilation cds on the market that it becomes difficult to decide what to spend your money on. The lower priced albums for this lady are pretty much a total rip off! Some don,t even appear to feature this talented ladys vocals! And the rest don,t contain the tracks you want! This particular album has what are to my mind Donnas best songs! Starting off with On the Radio and taking you through her early disco projects The classy I Remember Yesterday, I Feel Love, and my own personal favourite Heaven Knows! Moving onto Dim All The Lights and Hot Stuff, before finally reaching her classic collaboration with Barbra Streisand No More Tears Enough Is Enough! The album even features a full version of On The Radio to finish off! So if you,ve stumbled onto this site in an attempt to find the best compilation album then this is IT!!!!!!!!!

I still own a copy of the vinyl, the collecion spanning over 4 record sides and I still have a lot of nostalgia for this collection. What sets it apart is that the engineer very cleverly and sublimely took the tracks into one continuous mix, (apart from flipping the record over after each side!). Some other tweaking and editing was done and of course the die-hards will notice some HEAVY editing on some of the longer tracks, noticably on "I Feel Love" where it seems just as it picks up pace, it moves into the next track. Also "Hot Stuff" suffers from it's shortened wonderful guitar solo in the middle, making it shorter than the 7" single. These little niggles out of the way though-what really impresses and puts this collection apart from any other is the little interludes recorded to help the tracks mix together seamlessly, which of course can't be found anywhere else other than this album. So it's a unique collectors item, as no other Donna Summer compilation is presented in this way. It's a shame that other artists and producers never picked up on this idea when compiling a Greatest Hits, as it makes buying a collection, even if you own all the albums, a new experience. Imagine a Madonna collection for example given this imaginative approach. Since Madonna copied most of Donna's disco ideas, I'm surprised she hasn't done it. It can be very boring for fans to buy a compilation by their favorite artist, only to find there's no changes, or inspiration behind a release. Donna Summer fans, when she was at her peak, always got something different on every release, even in a compilation, which sets her apart and is why this compilation is a must and could teach a few of today's artists how to do it and give the fans a reason to buy such a collection. Horrible remixed extra tracks at the end don't count, cos they're usually terrible and just cash in's. This one got it right!

There are lots of compilations but this is not the artists fault. There is a huge difference between this and all the others. This is album is unique and like no other greatist hits album. This album contains on record and transfered 3 sides of non stop music and one side of extended remixes of One the radio and No more tears of over 11 minutes with Barbra streisand - one of the best diva duets ever and beats all the remakes. This is also written by the guy who gave babs "the main event" and "last dance".

all her hits are cleverly mixed into each other with percussion and music overdubs and even changing of pace. it would be great to see all her 12 versions mixed in like this.

You want a Donna Summer night out then put the record on and dance

From the parentcore tumblr blog:

I don't know if anyone saw the excellent BBC4 documentary The Joy of Disco last Friday, but it really rams home how modern dance music just wouldn't have been the same without Disco. DJ Nicki Siano apparently pioneered the use of beat matching to create endless tunes for people to dance to - something I hadn't quite appreciated - I'd always thought that was all down to the likes of Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash and the other godfathers of Hip Hop. Either way, it's pretty fitting therefore that this Donna Summer Greatest Hits album is presented as one seamless mix of some of the most recognizable tunes from the Disco era (well, as seamless as it's possible to be over four sides of vinyl).

On the Radio, Love to Love You Baby (once extended to a 17 minute mix by the impressively moustachioed producer Giorgio Moroder at the demands of a record exec who said that the revellers at a party he was hosting just didn't want to stop dancing to it), I Feel Love, Bad Girls, Hot Stuff - Donna Summer has tonnes of awesome tunes that quite frankly make you want to move like THIS. Her lilting sexy voice overlaid on top of Giorgio Moroder's thumping electronic beats create an exciting and infectious concoction and I'm kicking myself for never having played this record when attempting to entertain my mates at the various parties I've DJ-ed at with PJ over the years.

Incidentally, as well as producing some of Donna Summer's most well known hits, the highly influential Giorgio Moroder also scored a number of well known movie and TV soundtracks including Scarface, Battlestar Gallactica (although I do not remember the cylon's looking like this in the original. NERDGASM ALERT) Superman 3 and The Never Ending Story.
