I'm really surprised that this excellent book hasn't received any reviews yet.
A superb chronological account of the social treatment and experience of homosexuality in the UK from the trial of Oscar Wilde until after the initial AIDS crisis of the 80's.
Much of the book is told through the voices of those who lived and loved in this period and the book is filled with excerpts from books, poems, diaries, letters and recorded interviews. The first few chapters were more focused on literary men, which is understandable given the dearth of information from the ordinary man. The balance is redressed later on in the book, although the famous and educated/artistic do predominate overall.
I really enjoyed this book, its eloquent and well-written and gives an excellent overview of the twentieth century experience.
