Biography

Motörhead's overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal was one of the most groundbreaking styles the genre had to offer in the late '70s. Though the group's leader, Lemmy Kilminster, had his roots in the hard-rocking space rock band Hawkwind, Motörhead didn't bother with his old group's progressive tendencies, choosing to amplify the heavy biker rock elements of Hawkwind with the speed of… Read more in Amazon's Motörhead Store

It's useful to know what this CD is, and what it isn't. It's not really an 'official' release, but neither is it yet another of the millions of'live/rare' Motorhead compilations.

This is Motorhead's unreleased debut album, recorded for UA in 1975 with Larry Wallis [Pink Fairies] on guitar. The original drummer, Lucas Fox, left/was removed after the recording and when Phil Taylor then joined he rerecorded all the drum parts except Lost Johnny.

[For the history buffs, Eddie Clarke was then recruited as second guitarist but Larry Wallis left after one rehearsal, resulting in the familiar Kilmister/Clarke/Taylor lineup.]

UA didn't release it until 1979, on the back of Motorhead's 'Overkill/Bomber' popularity.

All the tracks but one [Fools] were rerecorded in better versions for Motorhead's self-titled official debut on Chiswick. If you like the raw, gruff, underproduced 'British MC5' sound of that album, give this a spin.

Inessential? Yes. Minor? Yes. Bad? No- and it's part of the story.

I'm not 100% sure about this but I think that three of the four 'alternate takes' [City Kids, Motorhead and Leaving Here] are Motorhead's very first studio efforts produced by Dave Edmunds, which exist only on acetate.

Motor Fairies 12 July 2007
Format:Audio CD
Oh man, I'd forgotten how good this album was! If you only know Motorhead for it's bludgeoning metal force, then this could be a massive disappointment for you. Overkill it certainly ain't. However if you love the Ladbroke Grove scene of Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies then this album is an essential purchase. Picture the scene, Lemmy's left Hawkwind and wants to put all of his previous band's cosmic fripperies behind him, plug in his bass, and get down to some serious rock n roll. Who better to ask along for the ride than Larry Wallis, guitar slinger with the anarchic Pink Fairies.

The album kicks things off with the gutteral roar of a motorbike before piling headlong into the riff for Motorhead. No violin solos or electronic space effects on this version boy. Just straight ahead rock n roll as it was intended to be played.

Of the original 9 tracks on the album Lemmy takes lead vocals on 7, and perhaps surprisingly for some listeners, Larry sings 2. Of the two that Larry sings, 'Fools' is by far the best. A fabulously venemous rant against the evils of managers and agents. Oh yeh!

My largest gripe with this album is perhaps the fact that they recorded a version of City Kids, originally from the Pink Fairies' Kings of Oblivion album. The three ex-Hawkwind tracks all benefit greatly from their stripped down reworking, but City Kids was already an excellent rock blast, and unfortunately Motorhead's version doesn't quite do it justice.

But enough of this wittering. If you hunger for some in yer face rough and ready rock played by a group of social misfits with nothing on their minds but having a good time at the loudest possible volume - then this is the baby for you.

I bought this in the early eighties after buying Ace Of Spades and No Sleep To Hammersmith and it was the most pleasant surprise I have ever had from a record. Sure, there's no heads down 100 mph heavy metal here but what there is is a very entertaining blues/boogie/rock album with some great tunes and some quality lyrics. And it shows that there is another side to Mr Kilminster from the one we all know and love. Go on treat yourself.
