Having read some of the fantastic reviewss this new CD has been receiving in the international record magazines (Gramophone, International Record Review and others) I wanted to hear for myself, as I have long loved the music of Lecuona. The big and wonderful surprise was to confirm these great reviews, that this is nindeed the best Lecuona CD I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. First of all, the songs are exquisite. The poems for most of them are simplistic (except for the final song of the CD), and all deal with the same love theme.Unlike tango lyrics, these ballads have no complicated affairs or tragedies to report, mostly feelings of love. But there are many subtleties, in bothe the music and the lyrics, and thanks to these great performances, each hearing brings something new to the listener.
Carole Farley is one of the top opera soingers in the opeta stages of the world, so to have her do these songs is real luxury. Her sweet, beautiful soprano voice, is perfect for Lecuona. No trace here of her operatic background. She has managed to down-size her voice to fit each song. The pianist is exemplary. He has captured the improvisatory quality of Lecuona, and provides just the right kind of support. A great, memorable recording in every respect. The poems apper translated in several languages, and the liner notes are quite helpful in understanding the composer's career and process.

It has to be quite difficult for an opera singer with the size of voice to be heard in large theaters to be able to down-size it and sing simple ballads. Several opera singers have attempted it, and in most cases they fail, because they sound operatic. Carole Farley has obtained, in this new recording, the perfect sound for these beautiful Lecuona melodies. Only in the final song, which is almost operatic, she lets herself go
with the full extent of her powerful voice. And what an effect it makes!.
Surely one of the most recorded singers today (I have her Prokofiev songs, a couple of CD's of French songs, and even a couple of Kurt Weill recordings, and a CD of songs by Ned Rorem), this versatile artist is able to communicate warmth and spirit. This is a recording to treasure. John Constable, known as a specialist in avant-garde music and barroque, shows here that he can play anything, in any style.

I probably have one of the most complete collections of Lecuona's recorded music. This new BIS release is without any doubt one of the best in my entire Lecuona collection, and certainly the most outstanding of the vocal albums. There is such a spontaneity, so much warmth in each one of the songs, both by Ms. Farley and Mr. Constable, two of the greatest artists I have heard in a long time. And they seem to be so versatile. I have several other recordings by John Constable, sometimes playing barroque music in the harpsichord (and several Mozart operas as well), and other times playing the most avant-garde music with the London Symphonietta. And here he plays Lecuona as a Cuban-born musician, with complete understanding of the music and the improvisational quality of the piano accompaniments.
Carole Farley has one of the loveliest soprano voices I have ever heard. The sultry quality of her sound is a perfect fit for these romantic songs. Her Spanish pronunciation is impeccable. I have heard this recording over and over, and have also played it for many people, and everyone loves it. It communicates at once. Ms. Farley is also extremely versatile.
Among the recordings I have of her are the Beethoven 9th Symphony on DGG with the RPO; several Prokofieff song recitals, in Russian, one on Chandos, the other on ASV; a magnificent album of Grieg songs with the Philharmonia Orchestra on Dinemec; a spellbinding Voix Humaine by Poulenc (I have four
versions of it, all with Ms. Farley: an RCA record, a Chandos CD, a Phoenix USA CD and a DECCA VHS); Richard Strauss opera arias on Chandos, and many others. The Lecuona is the best.
