Margaret MacDonald, the oldest child of the Laird of Somerstrath, had been betrothed to a nobleman since childhood. But two weeks before her wedding, she finds her village decimated by a Viking raid. Review

"With unparalleled skill and an exquisite sense of time and place, RITA Award winner Givens ("The Destiny") spins a violent, realistic tale of love, loyalty, and betrayal, breathing life into characters both real and fictional and vividly portraying the turbulence and intricate political machinations of 13th-century Scotland." -- "Library Journal" --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great introduction to the kilgannon series 13 Aug 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although this book was written after Kilgannon and The Wild Rose of Kilgannon, it tells the story of the first Gannon and how Kilgannon was established in the highlands of Scotland. I read the other two books first so lots of incidents had more meaning when I read this book. As usual, Kathleen Givens writes a gripping tale with the poignant relationship that develops between Margaret and Gannon. It describes how the Vikings raided the western coast of Scotland and the effect of these raids on the clans. I would highly recommend this book and especially the two other books in the kilgannon series (above).

4.0 out of 5 stars good read 24 Jun 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
good read about the period of history when the vikings raided scotland. although this story is a mix of fact and fiction isnt doenst feel that way. the relationship between margaret and gannon is very sweet and tender, u dont get the passion and excitement of them discovering their feelings and each other. cant wait to read nell's story(margarets sister) as it has been hinted at in this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring 10 Dec 2011
By Reader
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is boring and you don't get to feel for the characters. It is predictable and not believable. It was hard to read it until the end. It is going straight to the dustbin. There is no real romance, nor adventure, or any original story. I am sorry I bought this and the second in the series (Rivals for the crown) at the same time for I would definitely not buy the second one after reading the first.
