Product Description

Review

An engaging guide to everything a visitor will see ... a sumptuous volume, small enough to carry in your bag when exploring the park, and a handsome addition to the coffee table for armchair travellers. --The Garden Design Journal

A wonderful guide to what has quickly become a popular institution. --Geographical

I wish [the book] had been available when I was last there ... La Farge gives a good account of the campaign to save and transform the High Line and along the way - quite literally - she drip-feeds us with a torrent of informative snippets, both generally municipal and specifically horticultural. --Hortus

My husband and I visited High Line April 2013 where we celebrated our 65th birthdays, it is an amazing venture and the two guys who started the ball rolling are amazing to have followed their dream particularly when they did not even know each other in the beginning but soon did and the rest is history. To enjoy this book you have to visit the Highline to understand how it has evolved there account of all their adventures stresses is lovely and reading it took us both back to our mile and half walk in springtime in New York. We hope to go back 2015 when hopefully The Highline is completed we can't wait. Thank you Josh and Robert for completing your dream and everyone who financed it regards Gina and David Gregory Cardiff Wales

It is a very good thing that this book has been reissued in an updated version to include new developments on The High Line. The preface by Rick Darke, a renowned plantsman, is excellent especially for those whose main interest is the use of plants. Excellent pictures throughout.

A must read about a gem in New York City 3 Mar. 2015
By Robert C. Ross - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Three years later, still an essential book to a gem in New York City. Here is a link to the revised edition; there have been many changes and the updated edition is now essential. On the High Line: Exploring America's Most Original Urban Park (Revised Edition)

My original review is still accurate for this version:

As a life member of the New York New Jersey Trail Conference, I'm always on the lookout for new hiking opportunities and projects. Over the years I've hiked around the perimeter of Manhattan four times, the last time in 1999 when on a rest stop I found a short note about something called the Friends of the High Line. I became a Friend, and learned many of the details of the project first hand. The current statement of purpose for the Friends reads:

"Friends of the High Line works to build and maintain an extraordinary public park on the High Line. We seek to preserve the entire historic structure, transforming an essential piece of New York's industrial past. We provide over 90 percent of the High Line's annual operating budget and are responsible for maintenance of the park, pursuant to a license agreement with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Through stewardship, innovative design and programming, and excellence in operations, we cultivate a vibrant community around the High Line."

Boy, have the Friends ever succeeded. Almost any day of the year, the park is jammed with tourists and New Yorkers alike. It has become a mecca for urban life in the City with dozens and dozens of stories, some of them almost unbelieveable.

This beautifully produced hard cover book details many of those stories, and it contains dozens of beautiful pictures documenting the construction and the finished portions of the park. At first sight, I thought that was all it might be, a coffee table book of pretty pictures. It's that, of course, although not a large as a real coffee table book, but the substance is superb. You can learn a great deal about how ordinary citizens can make a tremendous contribution to the improvement of their cities, and much of it with no governmental help at all.

The future looks very bright. The Friends are committed to continuing the High Line to the north; I always end at the northern end looking longingly over the rusting metal trestles and dreaming about how beautiful it will be when that extension matches the glories to the south.

What a wonderful park! What a wonderful book!

Addendum: An interesting description of the hike around Manhattan, about 33 miles, 12 hours, was written by Cy Adler, Walking Manhattan's Rim: The Great Saunter. A bit dated, but still useful. R.
