I thought this book was going to be another memoir following the craze that has been present for some time. I found this book strayed away from my predictions, it is told in both first and third person which is a refreshing change. And yet this book has not chosen this narrative style to go against the grain but because Lisa See can. I could relate to this book because I am half Chinese and half white, her story had me gripped. But this book is not jst for a limited audience this chronical entertains anyone and everyone with aninterest in history and culture. BRILLIANT

As usual Lisa See's book combines fantastic insight into the Chinese culture and with this one her family history is explored. Very different to her others books inasmuch as it is much more of a factual book but cleverly inter-twined with a fictional side. Difficult to explain but great to read.

On Gold Mountain follows the See family from their early years in China to settling in America. It is a facinating read about the struggles faced by the family in their quest to earn money and fit into the Western society and touches on the traditions still kept up in an attempt not to loose their heritage.

I've just finished reading this for the second time. It is fascinating reading on so many levels. First, there is the economic success story of an enterprising Chinese man and his multiple wives and multiple families.

Fong See and Letticie Prewitt entered into a marriage contract in California at the turn of the 20th century when marriage between Asians and other races was forbidden. They had a family of five children and became extremely successful dealers in Chinese antiques. Fong See was the shrewd entrepreneur and Ticie was the heart and brains.

This is their story and the story of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It is a very timely book for the present with all the controversy surrounding current immigration and the bias against Mexican immigrants.

I like the author Lisa See and have read most of her books. this was one I gave to my mother, my daughter, we and keep passing it on. It is a wonderfully written saga about a family and their history which takes you to another time and culture. It has been many years since I read this but going to order again preferably in Hardback so I don't part with it ... This time!

This was a fascinating, true story of a Chinese family arriving in Los Angeles and their story down several generations building a business empire but still very much maintaining their Chinese family ethos (there were one or two exceptions). A jolly good read about something I knew absolutely nothing about and therefore very refreshing. Pleasantly and pleasingly told although quite detailed.

Prompt delivery. Book was in excellent condition. The story was fascinating and enthralling all the way through. It gave a huge insight into the history of Chinese immigration to the USA and Chinese familys' cultural and economic experiences over time. It was difficult to put the book down at times as I was totally engrossed in the story. Highly recommended.

It's more educational than entertaining I feel. I do have an interest in people and places but was sort of waiting for something exciting to happen.
