Product Description

Late on a winter's night in 1976 at the age of 5, I lay awake in bed, absolutely petrified. Something was causing a man to shout, swear and bang in the lounge beneath my room. When I eventually went downstairs, I found my elated Dad sitting in front of the last couple of minutes of the football highlights on TV. He'd watched his team, Aberdeen, reach the Scottish League Cup Final with a dramatic 5-1 victory over Rangers.

It was the first in a series of events that would forge an amazing relationship with my Dad as we followed Aberdeen at home and away, for the next ten years.

It was a time when the enormous fan base of the Old Firm rampaged through the streets and football grounds of Scotland. A time when we watched Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen rise to the top of Scottish and European football, and then fall all the way back down again...

On Fire 2 Aug 2010
By LP101
Format:Paperback
A truly heartfelt, roller-coaster account of a time when the minnows of Scottish football took on the mighty teams of Europe, and won, and a young boy, through an extraordinary relationship with his dad, discovers the harsh realities of life, growing up & the world of football. Through the eyes of this boy we discover the thrills & fears of experiencing the live football match, almost gladiatorial at times, and how the obsession of a football fan shapes every aspect of his life - from family relationships, school life, early romances & friendships. This book is often touching, highly dramatic & very funny and is a book that has a much broader appeal than to just those with a love of football.

This, the first book to be written about the successes of Alex Fergusson's 80's football team from a fan's point of view, presents a fascinating insight into the hopes, fears (occasionally terrors) and experiences of a young boy growing up in Perth but supporting the Aberdeen team known as The Dons. His relationship with his father - with whom he travelled the length & breadth of Scotland as spectators - is warmly but frankly portrayed as is his dealings with peers, teachers and fans of other teams. A good read for anyone interested in the trials, tribulations and social interaction of youth.

On Fire With Fergie 8 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
This book brought back a lot of memories for me, as I grew up in the north East of Scotland and was in High School myself in the early 80's.
I was lucky enough to go to some of the European matches that the author talks about in the book, when Fergie's Dons were on the up & up.
We didn't realize at the time how lucky we were to be witnessing these games....we sort of just took it for granted that it would continue.

Fantastic book and a great insight into the thoughts of a young lad who's Dad's enthusiasm for 'fitba' gets him hooked on the game. Also great to see how football was the bond between him and his dad. You can tell at the end of the book that he's torn between stopping going to the games and not wanting to upset his dad.

The tales from school of how the rival supporters loved the bragging rights after a win and dished out punishments to the others also transported me back to my own school days. Having been to Ibrox in the 80's when Aberdeen won 3-1 and Rangers had 2 players sent off plus we witnessed a pitch invasion, I can emphasize with the author's constant fears of getting 'battered'. That's just what it was like going down to Glasgow for matches.
You might have thought that not wearing any colours would make it safe... but that just meant you could be labelled a 'casual', which was probably worse !! But looking back... those were great days, great trips, great matches and most of all...like the author says... great memories.

I borrowed this book from the local library and read it within 3 days, but I'll be going out to buy my own copy. I think that says it all.
