Vaughan Williams loved Christmas, and probably devoted more music to it than any other British composer - certainly in modern times. It is no surprise, therefore, to find that among the 800 folksongs he collected was a decent number of folk-carols, and these, along with a few rare folksongs, are well-represented on Albion's latest release of RVW rarities. In reading the liner notes and listening to this CD two things are immediately obvious. First, there is the sheer physical extertion expended by the composer in collecting folksongs around the turn of the last century. He travelled the country listening to local singers and noting down their efforts. His collecting in Sussex, Essex and Norfolk is well-known, but here we find contributions from Dorset, Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire - and all this in an age when public transport would not always have been easy. The second point is that although all these pieces are traditional tunes, the fingerprint of RVW can always be found in the accompaniment.

The carols and folksongs speak directly to the listener without any frills, and any further comment would be superfluous. There are, in any case, full liner notes which not only provide all the texts, but a brief background to when and where each piece was collected. All the listener need do is sit back and savour.

There is a good mix of the relatively familiar ("On Christmas Night", "The Truth Sent From Above", "Wassail Song", "The Ploughman", "Rolling in the Dew") with the virtually unknown, and there are one or two familiar texts ("Dives and Lazarus", "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen") to less familiar tunes.

Vaughan Williams collected hundred of folk songs, and the discography is pitifully thin. Here at last is a disc of his delightful folk carols and a handful of not-well-known folk songs. They are an absolute delight and the performances are excellent. Full marks to all concerned -- and how about a follow-up disc?

A hugely enjoyable disc which I guarantee will get the discerning listener in the Christmas mood. The Vaughan Williams arrangements have great simplicity and clarity - indeed, they have genuine sincerity and the composer resisted the temptation to imprint his own stamp too heavily.

These are straightforward and honest performances of these lovely songs. Welton's baritone is pure and youthful but characterful when required. The balance between the voice and accompaniment is pretty much perfect. Beautiful.
