About the Author

Michael Morpurgo Former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo needs no introduction. He is one of the most successful children's authors in the country, loved by children, teachers and parents alike. Michael has written more than forty books for children including the global hit War Horse, which was made into a Hollywood film by Steven Spielberg in 2011. Several of his other stories have been adapted for screen and stage, including My Friend Walter, Why the Whales Came and Kensuke's Kingdom. Michael has won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children's Book Award and has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal four times. He started the charity Farms for City Children in 1976 with his wife, Clare, aimed at relieving the “poverty of experience” many young children feel in inner city and urban areas. Michael is also a patron of over a dozen other charities. Living in Devon, listening to Mozart and working with children have provided Michael with the ideas and incentive to write his stories. He spends half his life mucking out sheds with the children, feeding sheep or milking cows; the other half he spends dreaming up and writing stories for children. "For me, the greater part of writing is daydreaming, dreaming the dream of my story until it hatches out - the writing down of it I always find hard. But I love finishing it, then holding the book in my hand and sharing my dream with my readers." Michael received an OBE in December 2006 for his services to literature. Quentin Blake Quentin Blake is known as one of the greatest children’s book illustrators of all time. His eye-catching and distinctive style has been featured on books by world-famous authors such as Michael Morpurgo as well as on his own works of fiction. But undoubtedly his most famous partnership was formed with the author Roald Dahl on many of his books for children.

Fantastic book bringing together the true Christmas story and fantasy. It's a story of what happens to the little shepherd boy who is left behind to look after the sheep when the grown up shepherds rush off to see the new baby King Jesus. He thinks it unfair that as the smallest, he never gets to do exciting things like his older brothers, but his adventure turns out to be the best of all with help from the angels!

When you've finished wrapping the presents and decorating the tree and find yourself with 15 minutes to spare, get yourself and any spare children comfortable on the sofa with hot chocolate, a mince pie and this wonderful book and give yourselves a pre-Christmas treat.

There have been countless retellings of the Christmas story but few as tender and touching as this. While intended for young readers it will appeal to all ages with its unique narrative and irresistible illustrations by Quentin Blake.

Few of Grandpa's relatives really believe his story but they always look forward to hearing it on Christmas Eve. He tells it in the same way each time, beginning with "When I was very little....."

As a boy he tended sheep with his father, uncle, and older brothers. One cold, starry night they were visited by the angel Gabriel who told them of an amazing birth, and invited them to come and see the baby for themselves. Well, of course, someone had to stay with the sheep while the other shepherds went over the hill to Bethlehem. Since Grandpa was the youngest he was left behind.

Oh, how he cried and wailed as he watched the others disappear into the night. He shouted, "It's not fair!" And then Gabriel made a return visit, offering to carry the boy to Bethlehem.

Young readers will be delighted with the outcome of this story, and adults may wish they could believe it. Whatever the case, "On Angel Wings" is sure to become a family Christmas favorite.

A lovely story, suitable for over 7yrs depending on childs reading comprehension. I bought it as a Christmas story for the family as I love having a collection to read over the festive time. As my children are growing up it is nice to have some shortish stories that are suited to the older ones too.

Bought this and 'The best Christmas present in the World' for my 9 year old to read before/over Christmas, to give a bit of focus on the 'real meaning' rather than just tinsel, presents and food and was not disappointed.

Both books are short but very well written and illustrated. They are ideal for younger children from around 7 to 10 (depending on reading age). I read one to my daughter on Christmas Eve and the other on Christmas night. She loved them both and it also gave us a moment to think in the crazy Christmas rush.

The story is basically a re-telling of the Angels visit to the Shepherds, when Jesus was born but from an alternative and dramatised perspective, that adds interest without taking anything away from the biblical event. It is a story but it is warm and endearing.

Buy it, store it with the Christmas decs, read it to your kids for a couple of years and then pass it on to someone else with young children.

Nice to find some good clean untainted reading that focuses younger readers on the true magic and purpose of Christmas.

I love this little book so much! I read it every advent to my kids and they adore it. I cannot read it without crying! It brings Christmas alive in a very intimate way. Before you know it you are in the story. You are on the hillside and you feel the chill of the night air, then the warmth from the fire. You can smell the hay in the manger, hear the animals. You can almost feel His soft skin, count His little fingers and feel His tiny breaths ........ I have goosebumps just thinking about it!

Preparing for Christmas one year, I read from this little book to gathered friends - there wasn't a dry eye in the room!

I have bought many copies and gift it to children and adults alike.

This book is great for kids and adults, for believers and non-believers. It is truly beautiful!

I have purchased this for my eldest grandaughter. She lives in the USA and I will be sending it to her as a book to be read during Advent. I have bought several Michael Morpurgo books for my grandchildren, and usually read them before I send them! He is a great storyteller.

Another classic from Michael Morpurgo. His stories are a joy to read and the illustrations are excellent. As a stocking filler for Christmas morning this is a must.
