What is body fat?
Our bodies need a certain amount of fat to function effectively, but too much fat can have a detrimental effect to your overall health. Studies have shown that a high level of fat in the body, in particular visceral fat, increases the risk of developing more serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. The level of body fat you should have will vary depending on age and sex; this chart indicates what level band you should be in depending on these factors.
What is visceral fat?
Visceral fat, or "central obesity", is used to describe the fat that is located inside the peritoneal cavity--that is, your midsection around your waist. Rather than being located directly under the skin as subcutaneous fat, this "visceral fat" can be found in between your internal organs, many of which are situated in this cavity.
Studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between high levels of visceral fat and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease as well as other medical conditions. The BF508 Body Composition Monitor will give you a reading between 30 levels, to indicate your level of visceral fat; a normal reading would be between 1 and 9, with a reading higher than 15 being very high.
What is subcutaneous fat?
Subcutaneous fat not only accumulates around the stomach but also around the upper arms, hips and thighs, and can cause a distortion of the body’s proportions. Although not directly linked to increased risk of disease, it is thought to increase pressure on the heart and lead to other complications. The BF508 Body Composition Monitor does not display subcutaneous fat uniquely, but it is included in the body fat percentage reading as a whole.

Body fat has low electricity conductivity. The BF508 Body Composition Monitor measures the body fat percentage by using the Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) method. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues with higher water content that conducts electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The BF508 sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. This weak electrical current is not felt while operating the BF508. In order for the scale to determine body composition, it uses the electrical impedance, along with your height, weight, age and gender information, to generate results based on pre-determined data of body composition.

I got these to help monitor and motivate myself during a period of weight loss. They are doing just that, giving accurate and consistent readings for Weight, Bodyfat%, Viseral fat% and BMI. I then transfer them to a database program (Excel) and can produce graphs from there. (Sad I know but it helps me!)
The downside has been mentioned in previous reviews:- that there's no measurement in Stones and pounds but I knew that before I purchased and whilst its nice to know the Stones and pounds, Kgs make graphs easier (base 10 instead of base 14) and to be honest its about time I converted.
It would be nice to have the figures load direct to a computer (Wi Fi or otherwise) but its no great problem and for the money couldn't really be expected.
A great set of bathroom scales that function brilliantly, looks stylish and doesn't cost an arm and a leg (which I may end up chopping off to reach my target weight)

The instruction manual is incredibly easy to follow, with a simple step-by-step guide showing you how to use the monitor and then interpret the results. The guide takes the user through the importance of tracking and controlling your Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as your body fat percentage and visceral fat level. Your results can then be applied to the simple charts included within the guide, allowing you to clearly interpret your results in comparison to what is classed as `normal' for your body type. As daunting as these figures sound, it only takes a second to locate where you are on the various tables. Alas, my first results weren't too good!
The various figures are calculated by cleverly measuring the electrical resistance between your feet and your hands. The results are then displayed to the user as their BMI reading, their visceral fat level (the fat surrounding your internal organs) and their overall body fat percentage. To allow for quick day-to-day use, the scales can store the necessary body type information (i.e. sex, height and age) for up to five users. This means that this info does not need to be inserted each time the user uses the equipment. The scales also have a `guest' function, for when a non-saved-user wishes to find out their statistics.

These scales are of solid construction and the readout is nice and clear. The handle unit is a good idea as it makes it easy to read the display as well as it having the sensors in it for the body fat measurements.
The body fat analysis is basically an electrical resistance measurement between your hands and your feet, the more resistance, the more fat you are carrying. It then uses this measurement to effectively estimate your your subcutaneous and visceral fat percentages. Your BMI is also available, which is done by simple calculation of your details which you input (height, age, gender) and then it adds the weight and outputs your BMI in the usual fashion. The instruction manual contains simple tables which can be used to interpret the data the machine outputs for those who are unaware of the relevant numbers.
The unit has a five person memory so that once you have input your gender, height, and age it will store them under a number (1-5) which you just select before you weigh yourself each time. You can also use the unit as a simple scale so you do not have to have the fat/BMI measurements if you do not want them.
The downside to these scales is that they only weigh in kilos (to the nearest 100 grams) or pounds which means if you are a fan of stones and pounds as most dieters are then you will have to get a conversion table or just use the pounds and calculate your weight from there. Now, my gripe is not with the measurement of body fat - these scales gave a consistently incorrect estimate, which I suspect is because I am athletic (the manual states that athletic people and body builders may not receive an accurate response). I can live with that, as long as the result are consistently incorrect, which as I said, they are. I can tell you that I am most certainly NOT 18% body fat, and I never have been, but these scales repeatedly suggested I am.
What really annoyed me was that these scales would not report my body mass correctly (or weight, as we more commonly call it).
I tested them against my usual bathroom scales. The two devices were placed side by side on a solid floor. My old scales tell me I am 62.8kg, the 10 seconds later the OMROM tells me I'm 63.8kg. Back to the original set - 62.8kg; OMROM - 64.2kg; back to bathroom scales - 62.8kg; OMROM - 64.4kg.
Only my old set is reporting my weight as consistent, but the OMROM has given me 3 different readings.
24 hours late I try a different test. I fetch my 10kg kettle bell and weight it. Both scales report it as 9.9kg. I then weigh myself... Bathroom scales say I'm 63.2kg, the OMROM says 63.8kg. Next I weigh myself holding the kettlebell, and I would expect the scales to report an increase of 9.9kg (give or take 100g). Oh dear. Bathroom scales report 73.2kg, OMROM reports 74.8kg - that's an increase of 11kg, 1kg more than it should do!
But it continued to say I am 18% body fat (though now my visceral score has increased from 5 to 6).... Read more ›
