What is Body Fat?
Our bodies need a certain amount of fat to function effectively, but too much fat can have a detrimental effect to your overall health. Studies have shown that a high level of fat in the body, in particular visceral fat, increases the risk of developing more serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. The level of body fat you should have will vary depending on age and sex; this chart indicates what level band you should be in depending on these factors.

What is Visceral Fat?
Visceral fat, or "central obesity", is used to describe the fat that is located inside the peritoneal cavity--that is, your midsection around your waist. Rather than being located directly under the skin as subcutaneous fat, this "visceral fat" can be found in between your internal organs, many of which are situated in this cavity.
Studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between high levels of visceral fat and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease as well as other medical conditions. The BF508 Body Composition Monitor will give you a reading between 30 levels, to indicate your level of visceral fat; a normal reading would be between 1 and 9, with a reading higher than 15 being very high.
What is Subcutaneous Fat?
Subcutaneous fat not only accumulates around the stomach but also around the upper arms, hips and thighs, and can cause a distortion of the body’s proportions. Although not directly linked to increased risk of disease, it is thought to increase pressure on the heart and lead to other complications. The BF508 Body Composition Monitor does not display subcutaneous fat uniquely, but it is included in the body fat percentage reading as a whole.

Body fat has low electricity conductivity. The BF508 Body Composition Monitor measures the body fat percentage by using the Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) method. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues with higher water content that conducts electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The BF508 sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. This weak electrical current is not felt while operating the BF508. In order for the scale to determine body composition, it uses the electrical impedance, along with your height, weight, age and gender information, to generate results based on pre-determined data of body composition.

Over the years, Omron have built up their name as one of the leading manufacturers of electrical heath equipment. Their new body composition monitor comprising of a set of electrical bathroom scales and body fat monitor, allows for a simple day-to-day check of your current body mass.
The instruction manual is incredibly easy to follow, with a simple step-by-step guide showing you how to use the monitor and then interpret the results. The guide takes the user through the importance of tracking and controlling your Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as your body fat percentage and visceral fat level. Your results can then be applied to the simple charts included within the guide, allowing you to clearly interpret your results in comparison to what is classed as `normal' for your body type. As daunting as these figures sound, it only takes a second to locate where you are on the various tables. Alas, my first results weren't too good!
The various figures are calculated by cleverly measuring the electrical resistance between your feet and your hands. The results are then displayed to the user as their BMI reading, their visceral fat level (the fat surrounding your internal organs) and their overall body fat percentage. To allow for quick day-to-day use, the scales can store the necessary body type information (i.e. sex, height and age) for up to five users. This means that this info does not need to be inserted each time the user uses the equipment. The scales also have a `guest' function, for when a non-saved-user wishes to find out their statistics.
The scales themselves are predominately constructed from a very solid plastic, allowing for a very sturdy and durable outer-casing. The scales require four standard AA batteries, four of which come supplied with the product. These should give around a year's worth of life if the user was to track their body statistics the recommended four times a day.
The most glaring drawback with the scales is that they only display the user's weight in either kg or lbs. The scales do not convert the lbs into stones & lbs, which is what a large proportion of the UK population are used to. For a piece of equipment with so many impressive functions and analytical statistics to offer, this was a bit of a annoying oversight.
All in all, the body composition monitor is a nifty little piece of equipment, which will help the health conscious amongst us to track their body's various fat levels. The scales look good with their modern and stylish design, as well as having a quick and simple usability.

I bought these scales as I am going on a new fitness regime and want to get more information about my body than just a simple weight measurement, and the idea of getting your BMI and fat measurements really appeals to me.
These scales are of solid construction and the readout is nice and clear. The handle unit is a good idea as it makes it easy to read the display as well as it having the sensors in it for the body fat measurements.
The body fat analysis is basically an electrical resistance measurement between your hands and your feet, the more resistance, the more fat you are carrying. It then uses this measurement to effectively estimate your your subcutaneous and visceral fat percentages. Your BMI is also available, which is done by simple calculation of your details which you input (height, age, gender) and then it adds the weight and outputs your BMI in the usual fashion. The instruction manual contains simple tables which can be used to interpret the data the machine outputs for those who are unaware of the relevant numbers.
The unit has a five person memory so that once you have input your gender, height, and age it will store them under a number (1-5) which you just select before you weigh yourself each time. You can also use the unit as a simple scale so you do not have to have the fat/BMI measurements if you do not want them.
The downside to these scales is that they only weigh in kilos (to the nearest 100 grams) or pounds which means if you are a fan of stones and pounds as most dieters are then you will have to get a conversion table or just use the pounds and calculate your weight from there. This is a little bit of a hassle that I think has lost this product an extra star for me in my own rating.
To summarise; these scales are a decent set and will give you more information about your health than a simple bathroom scale, not to mention they are reasonable value for money, but the lack of measurement in stones and pounds may frustrate you.

I was looking forward to trying these scales, as not only do they show your weight, they also show your BMI, body fat % and visceral fat level.
To get an accurate reading, stand the scales on a hard surface, not carpet. Switch them on by pressing the large power button at the front of the scales, this can be done by using your feet, no need to over stretch yourself by bending down to press it. After a few seconds it displays 0. You will need to enter your age, gender and height so that readings can be accurate. You can store several persons settings to save keep repeating entering the data by pressing the user button, User 1, 2, 3 etc is displayed so you can begin testing straight away, otherwise press the guest button and enter them each time you use the machine.
To take readings, either select the user data or enter it (as above), take the bar that is attached at the top of the scales (it is on a long cord), grip it with both hands and stand bare feet on the scales. Hold the bar at 90 degrees for a few seconds whilst it calculates your readings by sending a small electric current through your body. During this process calculating is displayed and a bar at the bottom increases until at the end, when your weight is displayed. You can then get off the machine and press the set/mode button to cycle the readings. At the bottom of the display is a visual guide to see what range you fall in (low, normal, high or very high). I found out that I am the wrong height for my weight.
My reading was a high BMI (overweight) and a high visceral fat (fat stomach in simple terms). Great, technology has advanced to such an extent that machines are now telling me I am fat. I am just a little short for my weight, thats all.
A good set of scales with a novelty factor let down by just a few niggles. The power button seems a little flimsy, not the usual high Omron quality. The weight and height is displayed either in Kg/cm or lbs/feet and inches, which has to be set for one or the other at the beginning, no switching mid way - it would have been nice to be able to switch to see the results in different formats, or even a stone and pounds setting. The price is high if you do not intend to fully use the features of this machine.
