What is body fat?

Our bodies need a certain amount of fat to function effectively, but too much fat can have a detrimental effect to your overall health. Studies have shown that a high level of fat in the body, in particular visceral fat, increases the risk of developing more serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

The 'Omron BF214 Body Composition Monitor' is a set of digital bathroom weighing scales that not only tell you your body weight, but also your body fat (%), your BMI (Body Mass Index), any your skeletal muscle (%).

The first thing that should be said about the scales is that not only are they reasonably small and compact for a set of bathroom scales (measuring 28.5cm x 28cm x 2.5cm), but they also look incredibly contemporary and dare I say 'stylish' for such a mundane household item.

Now I have to admit that we're not exactly new to this whole 'body composition monitoring scales' malarkey. This is actually our third set for the house. A bit excessive I know. But it does allow us to give a reasonably knowledgeable point of view on the product.

To start with this particular set of scales is probably the most user-friendly set we've come across. Set-up is an absolute doddle. Just follow the instructions in the user manual - input your key personal data (height, age, sex) and away you go! The scales allow for up to four profiles to be programmed in and stored on them, plus one `guest' account that simply doesn't save the profile data for next time.

Once your stats are plummed in and you've chosen how you want the numbers displayed (metric or imperial), then it's just a simple case of tapping the 'on button' to turn it on (I've been using my big toe to do this!), stepping onto the scales (bare footed of course) and then waiting about 10 seconds for it to calculate your results.

For sheer ease-of-use and absolute simplicity alone these scales have to be one of my favourite sets already. There's no faffing around, no hassle in uploading data or fiddly settings. It's simply a case of spending around 60 seconds putting in your key body data when you first get them and then it takes 10 - 20 seconds whenever you want to see how you're doing. It's literally as simple as that!

These body measurement scales are excellent and much more motivating (or demotivating if you succumb to despair) than standard weight only scales.

I bought an older Omron model some time back, Omron BF508 Body Composition and Body Fat Monitor Bathroom Scale, and while that has 6 contact points for the body fat measurement (rather than the 4 here), lifting the hand unit on the old model can apply negative pressure on the scale, affecting the weight and skewing the results.

I have compared the results of both over 3 weeks and while this newer, simpler, flashier model was initially looked askance at, it gave consistent readings, the older one fluctuated too much, showing weight initially higher and then lower than this BF214. The difference at most was 500g (due in part I think to the hand unit on the old model).

So are digital scales accurate? Pretty much, I haven't tested it against an atomic set of scales at MIT, but I have been weighed-in at a martial arts competition on an old-fashioned thing, the result was almost the same, and the previous Omron scales helped me to keep in the weight group I was aiming for.

Consistent and reflecting my own changes? Yes. Even if you think the scales are a couple of hundred grams or a pound off you will have baseline results against which you can monitor your own progress. Write them down, the memory only keeps the last reading.

Body Fat. The reading will fluctuate depending on your level of hydration. Best to average out a week's results with this, or always weigh immediately as you get out of bed.

I have another set of Omron scales and I have to say that these ones are miles better (and I thought the old ones were good). The accuracy is fantastic and they're so easy to set up. I especially like that there are three different ways that you can display your weight (lbs, stone & kilos) - for some of us that still work in imperial it's really helpful!

There are several different pre-sets so you can record your weight loss (or gain) on a day by day (or week by week) basis. You can have multiple people use the scales and track their progress individually. All in all - a really great product!

    Pros:
    Good construction
    Nice, quality finish
    Touch buttons are responsive
    Easy to use
    Weighing function is accurate
    Calculates BMI

    Cons:
    Bodyfat calculation painfully wrong

The short version is that the scales rely entirely on BMI rather than impedance. In contrast to other brands of scales, like Tanita, Omron report a bodyfat range +/-8% of actual values, and that value only changes with BMI adjustment. Wearing rubber shoes does not change the reported value, which is worrying to say the least.

Go with the more expensive, albeit functionally accurate brands.

    Long version:
After doing some semi-scientific tests with two of Omron's body composition scales (BF212 and BF214), I've concluded that their algorithm for calculating body fat is wrong, misleading and a bit nonsensical. The scales function by entering your height, which combined with the observed weight calculates your BMI. This feature is pretty handy, and welcomed.

However, it seems that their body fat algorithm is exclusively based on this BMI value. I tested this by increasing the recorded weight by holding items on my persons, and reducing the weight by placing the scales on pliable vinyl flooring (which decreases the accuracy of the weighing feet). Each time the body fat moved up or down depending on the relative recorded BMI.

Electrical impedance based methods of body fat calculations are supposed to vary a considerable about depending on general hydration levels, muscle glycogen/water content, and how recently you've eaten/exercised. I noticed that no matter what, provided the same weight variables were introduced, the body fat percentage stayed constant.
