Product Description

CD Description

Originally released in November 1975, Ommadawn remains one of Oldfield’s favourite works. Recorded at his then home at Hergest Ridge, it again took the form of two lengthy suites of music, but with the addition of Irish and African influences. The album features folk legends Clodagh Simons and Paddy Moloney, as well as African drummers, Jabula. The album, with its new 2010 mix by Oldfield himself, also contains the original demo, thought lost and the perennial Christmas favourite, "In Dulce Jubilo".

Product Description

1975 album remastered 2010 Stereo Mix by Mike Oldfield, plus 4 BONUS tracks.

In my opinion Ommadawn was by far the best Mike Oldfield album and this 2010 edition is even better than the original. I would have settled for just a clearer sound but this surpasses all my expectations. On a surround sound system it is spectacular and dynamic and all the electric guitar sections cut through beautifully. Even the section at the start of side 2 is more melodic and easier to understand compared to the original which received a lot of criticism at the time.
Overall, a brilliant revamp of a classic recording.

Format:Vinyl
For those of you that bought the original 1975 vinyl issue of this timeless classic, you may have been disappointed by the state of the vinyl. Well, more than 25 years later, you have a chance to hear "Ommadawn" as it was meant to be heard. The vinyl is top-quality 180g virgin vinyl and plays impeccably with near-CD quality.

As for the album itself - what can I say? Mike Oldfield's most emotional and diverse work to date, fusing in an array of world music styles (African, Celtic and Greek amongst others) with his guitar work displaying an ability to relax, invigorate and keep you on the edge of your seat. The cathartic end of Side 1 is totally unbelievable - Mike's guitar stabbing its way through the African drums and celtic chants towards an explosive climax.

As for recommendations, I would suggest getting both this vinyl edition for collectability and a HDCD remaster for pure sound quality. Of course, if you like "Ommadawn", then any of Mike's works from 1973-79 come highly recommended.

STUNNING 27 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD
Always the best Mike Oldfield album but to hear this and how it dances as it unfurls and explodes out of the speakers it is jaw dropping in its clarity, attention to detail and 3 dimensional warmth of sound. A genius at the top of his form. What an amazing, moving and emotional piece of music lovingly restored and brought well into the 21st century to be a classic forever. Who would've thought perfection itself can even be added onto and improved? Really feels as if you are in the room as the music is being played and recorded. Ommadawn is a joy forever and such a masterpiece of music can barely be described in words, in fact why bother trying am away to listen to it again - loudly, it really is the best way to do it justice :)
