Product Description

Product Description

A special connection with ancient Egypt drew Omm Sety to Egypt, where she studied with the great Egyptologists Selim Hassan and Ahmed Fakhry. For more than four decades she made her home in the shadow of the Great Pyramid of Giza and in the mudbrick village surrounding the Temple of Sety I at Abydos. For her, there was no separation between ancient and modern Egypt. Pictures on tomb walls illustrated the games children played in the streets in front of her house. The texts she translated from the temple walls shed light on the origins of the social customs of her Egyptian neighbors. For another four decades this book, which deserves to be called Omm Sety's life work, remained hidden away. Now Nicole B. Hansen, an Egyptologist who specializes in connections between ancient and modern Egypt, brings this work to light in an annotated edition with extensive notes and bibliography, illustrated with Omm Sety's own drawings. It features a foreword by Kent R. Weeks, who rediscovered KV5 in the Valley of the Kings, and an introduction by Walter A. Fairservis, the late director of the Hierakonpolis Project. For Egyptologists, this book includes explanations of texts from the Pyramid Texts to Herodotus as well as ancient Egyptian art. For anthropologists, it represents the results of a lifetime of unbridled participant-observation, during which Omm Sety used folk treatments to cure her ills and agreed to serve as a medium for a spirit during a magic ritual. For those interested in Omm Sety herself, this book provides new insights into her life, the people she knew and the places she lived.

Omm Sety's Living Egypt: Surviving Folkways from Pharaonic Times
I found this an excellent book for anyone who knows about and is interested in the life of Umm Sety the English Egyptologist and Anthropologist who lived, and died, at Abydos.
It is has a clear preface by Dr. Nicole B. Hansan, a forward by Dr. Kent Weeks one of worlds great and respected Egyptologists, and an introduction by Walter Fairservis that clearly explains Umm Sety and her life in a nut shell.
The rest of the book is made up of Umm Sety' own notes and is a must for those who are interested in the people of Egypt, ancient and modern ( up untill 1970s when she died )and their daily lives,. This in not a guide book.
For more about Umm Sety read " The Search for Umm Sety " by Jonathan Cott.

A look back at Omm Sety 7 Feb 2012

This book was an older, but perhaps a newer version of the life of Omm Sety. I bought a later version, but his version is always a reference source for Her.
I felt the presence of Omm Sety through the words and feel of this book. Details in this book felt crisp, having the effect of being there at times. The writer brought out the soul of this blessed Woman.
I recommend this version as the one to read first. It will bring the essence of Egypt and the mystical to the reader.
Loved it! 20 Feb 2012

First of all, there are two kinds of books on Omm Sety: 1)her two biographies, which cover her life including her past life in Ancient Egypt and her relationship with king Seti 2)Books on egyptology written by her as part of her work, this is one of the very few of them.

I just loved it! it was so delightful to read this book. You'll learn about modern egyptian traditions and how they originated in ancient egypt -even when modern people don't even know.
Omm Sety takes us with her into the life of these villages and their folklore and adds some of the most entertaining stories --I loved the tales on djinn marriages her neighbours believed to be true.

I just wish there were more books written by her, because each of the three books I read were such a special experience, you just feel like being right there with her. She was a wonderful person.
May she be with Osiris and her Lady Isis (and Seti) in Amenti.
