Magnificent dream,

Patricia McKillip does it again. Her world is mysterious, changeable, alluring and dangerous. The main character, a young girl, is appealing in her search for meaning and understanding. She navigates a shifting and dangerous world with aplomb and risks a lot for someone else. The prose is lovely and the tale carries you with grace. What a lovely book.

A TRULY MAGNIFICENT READ - PURE ESCAPISM!,
By
This review is from: Ombria In Shadow (Paperback)
I totally agree with the previous Reviewer: 'Spy Groove' - and most certainly share the same sentiments with regards to the many fascinating Items in this story.'Ombira In Shadow' is by far one of the greatest novels I have ever read! This is yet another title aimed at the 'Young Adults' market, and I really can't think why, since this will appeal to any age group who loves 'Fantasy Fiction'. Beautifully written with lots of atmosphere, vivid characters (with names that one can pronounce!) and lots of subliminal inspirations at every turn! Countless dark rooms and passage-ways, twisting streets and ancient dark alleys to explore, with scenes that will conjure up all sorts of wonderful imaginings in your mind! This is pure escapism which will take you to places from where you will not wish to return! The nearest thing I've ever come to reading anything like this was C. L. Moore's collection of short stories called: 'Black Gods And Scarlet Dreams' which also left a lasting impression. Many will find the cover artwork to this book very misleading (here I refer to the 'Atom Fiction' edition only - there are bindings with much better and more appropriate artwork, and so be 'selective'!) The 'Atom ' edition was definitely a bad choice whoever it was that made that decision. The cover pictures a young girl (almost a child) half-dazed and looking somewhat 'love-sick', but this only serves to misconstrue this novel into being just a simple romance or 'contemporary' love story about adolescence - in fact it's neither of these, and the time in which the story is set shoots all over the place! I was really sorry to come to the end of this book, and will most definitely be reading more by this wonderful and remarkably talented author. Truly a modern classic! Magnificent!!

Enchanted Illusion,
By Spy Groove "Ravenna" (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ombria In Shadow (Paperback)
Very enchanting indeed :). Where did Ms. McKillip get the inspiration? There are so many items in the story itself I want to have e.g. the fan. I really enjoy the multiplied layer of the thrilling terror, mystery and the subtle love story (very subtle, you must pay attention into the word described specially towards the end of the book, yet very rewarding). Simply saying, this book is a masterpiece.
