Begin by listening to Anne Sophie von Otter sing "Ombre de mon amant" and relish that de capo at the end. Composer Michel Lambert was a singer most of his long life; his songs are a revelation, especially when performed with such a broad spectrum of expression. The teamwork between von Otter and Christie, conductor of Les Arts Florissants, is a sheer joy. Themes of jealousy and vengeance, such as in Charpentier's "Medea", or of fear and outrage as in Rameau's "Phaedra" used to be spiced with some humour at the royal court of France. And so they are in this superbly recorded production. Von Otter casts a spell on the listener when singing Medea's first air to the demons, declaims with majestic ardour "Cruel mother of my loves", turns into a singing butterfly as Cupid in "Hebe's Festival" by Rameau and coyly teases the listener in Charpentier's "Auprès du feu l'on fait l'amour" as well as in Lambert's song addressed to a shepherdess who loves her flock, her crook and her dog more than the poet. Her rich colouring of those mixed vowels in the French language, her careful baroque ornamentation precisely where needed and never exceeding the bounds of fine taste, and that density of passion beneath her subtle pianissimo induce me to listen over and over again. As for the magnificent quality of the chambre orchestra: William Christie leads it to burst forth with glorious sound and tempo when Medea cries out: "It is over! I am forced to act. I must break the bonds that tie me to this traitor!" and later lures you with Rameau's Chaconne to join the dance. This is a delicious recording.

Anne Sofie von Otter is a complete singer. She's
mastered many operatic roles and is a superb singer
of Swedish and contemporary songs. Her CD, "Home for Christmas"
is a delight and this new recording of French opera arias
by Charpentier and Rameau are beautifully recorded and
expressively sung. Highly recommended.Ombre De Mon Amant - French Baroque Arias

Reasonable but not as essential as I hoped 6 Jun 2010
By Steven Guy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The orchestra and choir are marvellous of course and all the music is great. I love French Baroque music and it is still poorly represented on CD, particularly French Baroque opera. By comparison, every month a new Handel recording seems to be issued - while many of the operas of Lully, Rameau, Campra and other French composers continue to languish on the printed page in university libraries and museums. Even the operas of Vivaldi are getting a better deal than those of Rameau, for instance. So every CD that promotes the French repertoire is welcomed by people like me.

Anne Sofie von Otter's contribution to Early Music has been both sustained and substantial. However, I found her performances here slightly over-wrought and not as convincing as those on similar recitals by Patricia Petibon, Véronique Gens and Carolyn Sampson. Her voice seems a little to "heavy" for some of the material and she doesn't strike me as a "natural" in this repertoire.

The orchestral movements, as previously mentioned, are superb as one would expect from Les Arts Florissants, but I already have most of them on other recordings of the complete operas or on discs of suites from the operas.

A sampler, perhaps, for someone new to French Baroque operas, but I would strongly recommend Patricia Petibon's marvellous "Virtuoso French Baroque Opera Arias", recorded earlier this decade, on the VIRGIN label instead. Petibon's selection is better and the whole CD hangs together in a much more satisfying and logical manner.
Ombre De Mon Amant- French Baroque Arias 7 May 2012

Ombre De Mon Amant- French Baroque Arias is a 2010 Deutsche Grammophon recording starring the amazing mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie Von Otter.William Christie leads Les Arts Florissants. Here one has the immense pleasure to listen to the genius of Charpentier, Lambert and Rameau. Kenneth Chalmers has written splendid music notes. I simply loved it. Highly recommended indeed. 5/5.
