Product Description

Review

'an attractive new edition with a lengthy essay by Tony Briggs, who characterises the poem, memorably, as "the story of the apocalypse told to us by a kind uncle"' (DAILY MAIL )

"a lovely new edition... Professor Briggs does us all a favour by putting before our red and weary eyes FitzGerald and this legacy from an older Iran." (Libby Purves TIMES )

Product Description

Edward FitzGerald's much-loved, often-quoted, best-selling 1859 translation of the Rubaiyat (650 editions in 150 years), with Attar's charming narrative poem, Bird Parliament. Extensive new introduction with notes and chronology.

I rarely read introductions, preferring to get into the meat of a book. However, this intro is well worth spending some time over - it explains the selection of verses, introduces the life and character of Fitzgerald and his orientalism, but is literate without being pompous. Most of the verses, 69 of 105, are from the first edition with others added from the fifth. This enables Briggs to keep the most famous stanzas and to add the sometimes more elegant lines from the later edition.

Good value for money, bound securely and pleasant to handle.

This otherwise lovely edition is marred by incompetent typesetting, where the typesetter has messed up the line-spacing, causing half of the Rubaiyat to be split across pages, which for me makes them unreadable. This is such an elementary mistake it takes the breath away. After the typesetter made that mistake, presumably an editor at some level approved it.

Read Briggs's exellent Introduction, but read the Rubaiyat themselves in another edition. These are suberb: Rubiyt of Omar Khayym: Special Facsimile Edition and Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (Oxford World's Classics) (I have also picked up some excellent Victorian editions done with superb typefaces, properly letterpressed, and of course correctly spaced, at secondhand sites.)
