Olympus WS-750M: A Multi-Format Voice Recorder for the Daily Commute

B003W2F4KE_WS-750M_Lifestyle_Image
Pocket-size storage for music, ideas and data files.

The WS-750M is the ideal travel partner for the business professional and those who are constantly on the go.

It’s slimline and ultra portable with dimensions of 98.5x40x11mm without protrusions, and lightweight at just 51g including batteries. It offers crisp and clear sound quality in any environment courtesy of its built-in stereo microphones.

Thanks to settings being easily adjustable on the fly, the WS-750M is ideal for recording in situations with lots of background noise, thanks to its Low Cut Filter. A Voice Filter setting further sifts out high and low frequencies to emphasise the mid-range human voice.

The WS-750M additionally offers the ability to play back MP3 and WMA music files as well as offering high quality PCM (WAV) recordings and playback.

Stereo Recording

Built in stereo microphones ensure high quality recordings every time, whilst stereo earphones are also provided. Six levels of voice recording give users total freedom to trade off quality against capacity as required. Stereo XQ records audio in the best possible quality, with further Stereo HQ and Stereo SP options selectable. The LP mode alternatively offers maximum recording time.

Retractable USB connection and convenient power source

The WS-750M offers the convenience of cable free transfer courtesy of its retractable built-in USB connector, which will also recharge its battery when connected to a computer. Power comes courtesy of just one AAA battery (included) offering 25 hours of recording time in LP mode and 30 hours in playback mode.

Multi format recording and playback

Offering the convenience of widely compatible audio formats, the WS-750M provides PCM (WAV) music file recording and playback. It further features Noise Cancellation to enhance audio capture. And with 4GB of built in memory providing up to 1058 hours of recording time, expandable via microSD slot, there’s plenty of space for your audio masterpieces.

A wealth of optional extras

Extend battery performance further by investing in a set of BR-401 rechargeable Ni-MH batteries and a compatible BC-400 quick charger. Additional recording aid comes courtesy of ME-10 and ME-15 Tie Clip Microphones, the ME-12 Noise Cancellation Microphone and KA-333 and TP-7 cables and adapters.

Big of screen, big on ease of use

The WS-750M further benefits from a big 1.36-inch full dot LCD screen, with operation via one large central button. Voice Activated recording also features for true ‘hands free’ operation. Operating menus are also a breeze to navigate and phenomenal extended recording possibilities make it a cinch to capture every thought, from a note to self to a lecture, business meeting or personal ‘to do’ list.

Recording scenes

To guarantee the best sound quality for a given situation, users can opt for one of five Scene Select options, including ‘conference’, which will highlight the speaker’s voice whilst eliminating any distracting background noise. A ‘DNS’ setting further improves results when the recorder converts speech to text when used in conjunction with speech recognition software.

Low Cut Filter

An ideal feature for cutting out a lot of background noise to ensure clear sound quality in any environment. Factor in noise cancellation and the result is a crisp and clear performance whatever the setting or occasion.

Other features include an 18mm round dynamic speaker.

This does exactly what it says on the tin. It provides good quality recordings in a variety of settings. As an academic, I interview people individually and in groups of varying sizes in places with wildly differing accoustics. The settings on the olympus allow you to use a variety of filters which eliminate boom etc. The music recording is also good. Olympus also provided 24 hour turn round in email support when I couldn't turn on some features. So excellent.

Olympus WS-750M 3 April 2011
By Mohsen
I purchased the Olympus WS-750M from amazon in March 2011 and I have been using it for 2 weeks now and I have found it to be an excellent digital dictaphone.

The plus points:

1. comes with 4GB memory which is a lot and you can easily add much more using a micro SD card.
2. Its small and light and very portable.
3. The battery life is good and it can easily be charged with a USB port. You don't even need a usb cable, it just plugs directly into a usb port.
4. The system menu is very user friendly and simple. I did not even read the manual and could easily use it.
5. The quality of the recordings are very high. It picks up a lot of detail.
6. Reasonably priced.

The negative point:

1. The system speaker is not very loud, so not great for people with hearing difficulties.

Overall an excellent digital dictaphone which I would recommend to anyone.

Having owned the Olympus WS750M Digital voice recorder for few days, I thought it would be worthwhile to pen a quick review.

My first impression, having received the package from Amazon, was that the unit was smaller, lighter and less robust than I had expected for the price. The inclusion in the box of a USB connection cable also came as a surprise until I realised that I had missed the built in USB stalk which the product uses to connect to the computer.

Having purchased this in order to be able to dictate using the Dragon Naturally Speaking software, I was pleased to discover that the menu functions allow for automatically recording with this in mind. I have already recorded a fair amount of notes, and was pleased to find that the software was able to transcribe it fairly easily, making errors only in about 5% of words. And this with very little training.

The menu functions, whilst not necessarily laid out to perfection, allow one to adjust almost the minutia of settings, which should be available on a voice recorder of this type. Being able to select from numerous qualities of stereo recording are important as I require the ability to record for long periods as well as - on occasion - recording very high quality, in such settings as my working life dictates.

At first I was disappointed that I was unable to edit my recordings and could only add new recordings or split recordings and delete sections, rather than being able to simply jump in and record over a section I had recorded previously - Like with an old tape Dictaphone for example. However, being able to edit on the computer once the voice has been transcribed makes things quite a bit easier.

The sound is very clear, both on the microphone on the front of the device, and through the earphones provided. The important thing is to get the mic sensitivity right.

All in all a good little machine, which I'm sure will be very handy for all sorts of applications.

[Below is what I recorded with the ORIGINAL TRANSCRIPTION through Dragon Naturally Speaking, without extensive training or using the 'correct' function that comes with the software. I have not edited this in ANY way. Promise. Oh, and I would recommend the DNS software too...]
