The WS-100 represents an innovative solution for those regularly on the move and who value the ease and versatility of having a single device capable of recording their voice files as well as transporting all other types of digital data. Featuring 64MB built in memory there is plenty of room for audio recordings. Its innovative design incorporates a USB connector directly on the body so that they can be plugged into the USB jack of virtually any PC-no extra software, cables or drivers are required. The computer instantly recognises the unit which then acts as an external drive on the PC, allowing files to be effortlessly dragged and dropped, to and from the voice recorder.

Using the high-quality Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, audio files are assured complete compatibility. They can be played back via Windows Media Player the standard media program found on just about every PC. Long battery life allowing up to 10 hours of continuous use and hassle-free operation make this ergonomic model a dependable companion. Naturally, a good range of file management functions are included to help streamline workflow too. Five folders are on hand which are capable of storing 199 entries each. Recordings may be played back in a choice of speeds to simplify searching for specific sections of a dictation. Unwanted files can be erased with ease and a lock function gives added security to the data; whilst the LCD monitors provide extensive file information.

I work on software usability and need to carry out interviews with customers and users. Sometimes I want to carry out tasks like prototype evaluation as a one-man band. Without some kind of recorder this would be impossible - I'd spend so long writing notes between asking people to do things, that people would die of boredom. Up steps the WS300-M. 45 minutes of conversation takes about 20Mb of the 256Mb available, so I can store about 12 45-minute interviews. Sound quality is amazing - the mike still picks up my (loudish) voice when it's in an upstairs study and I'm speaking from the bottom of the stairs.
I'll soon give up even bothering with a quick test to make sure all the participants are being recorded successfully. There are a few minor oddities like the On/Off button called "Hold", and another reviewer is right about the fairly weak case, but reading enough of the manual for my purposes and running through several tests took less than an hour. The final stage - copying files to your computer to keep as long as necessary and play with Windows Media player - is a doddle.

What a brilliant idea from Olympus to use windows Media player in Windows XP as the "source program" for this device. Quite simply, connect this unit to your USB port, and windows XP automatically recognises it, and Media Player takes over as the controlling program. No having to install weird and confusing propriatory software and drivers!
But thats just the half of it. This device has quite simply taken a Quantum Leap in voice recording technology, both in performance and size and....almost forgot....price! (although inevitably this will fall). When used in Stereo HQ mode (default setting) you'll get approx 8 Hours of recording time (this will use the 256MB memory!) at a quality that will amaze you. Due to the high quality sampling rate Olympus are using, even through the tiny, tiny, microphones employed in this unit, recordings are totally free of any compression artifacts, no hiss (obviously!), with brilliantly balanced sensitivity. (set on conference, the most sensative of the two settings, a recording in the Local Pub, captures the entire atmosphere, and all local conversation in glorious stereo.
Just 2 years ago, a recorder of this quality, size, recording capacity would have been unimaginable.
Battery life is no problem. Just 1 AAA quality alkaline battery will last well past the 8Hr recording limit.
I've given this device 5 stars because its performance and ease of use have impressed me beyond words, and its worked flawlessly for the past 3 months. However, if your listening Olympus (as if!) add another 10 quid on the price, and make the case more durable! Its flimsy plastic, and if it were to slip through my sweaty palms and make contact with concrete, bye bye Olympus WS-300M.........I think I'd Cry !!!

I was looking for a digital voice recorder to help with my lectures at University. I initially was hunting for something quite cheap, but I also needed something that could easily load onto my laptop without aggravation. After reading some of the reviews I opted for the Olympus. It cost much more than I had intended on spending but it is definitely worth every penny!

I got it today, literally from taking it out of the box and having a quick read of the instructions,I have already recorded some voice samples, plugged into my laptop and played back within seconds. I also loaded some music from my windows media player and it loaded up faster than my MP3 player!

It's extremely compact, very lightweight, uploads and downloads at lightening speed. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed. I do agree with one of the other reviews in that the only thing that could make this better would be a nice little cover to protect it from everyday use.
