The Olympus WS-210S digital voice recorder is the perfect companion for those on the move, offering wide-ranging versatility in a pocket-size format. Beside the ability to record notes, interviews and meetings in high quality, the WS-210S also stores other data formats. The transfer of such files onto this voice recorder is child's play and a USB interface ensures connection to a computer is trouble-free. So, whether you're travelling between meetings, lectures, university, college or home, files such as presentations, images or music can be taken with you - meaning you can leave the laptop at home! Intuitively-located buttons and a large LCD ensure that operation is simple, and you can even listen to your recording via the integrated speaker. The Olympus WS-210S provides users with remarkable freedom thanks to the ability to function as a USB mass storage device. Upon connection to a computer, the voice recorder is immediately recognised as an external drive. No software, drivers or special cables required. This simplicity ensures that even technical novices will not only be archiving their recorded files on a computer, but will also be uploading other data to their recorder in no time at all. With 512MB of memory, up to 138 hours of voice recording can be stored. The WS-210S features five recording modes so that the optimal balance between recording length and quality can be selected. Boosting sound quality is a voice filter which enhances the frequency range of the human voice whilst a low-cut filter ensures any background sound is significantly reduced. Five separate folders and the indexing function make it easy to manage files and variable playback speeds enable users to listen to recordings at the pace of their choice. The ultra-slim, rounded dimensions ensure the recorder not only fits into just about any pocket - but it is also incredibly lightweight. Buttons are intuitively placed and the large LCD provides the user with extensive information

    The Olympus USA site has a better product description than anywhere I have seen, so take a look. The 'S' in WS-210S = Stereo (I think), so any product without an 'S' at the end is a mono recorder.

    Amazingly small and light. Files are stored in Windows Media Audio format so will play in Windows Media Player, without any need for conversion.

    It has a 'USB Direct' USB plug contained withit the recorder so it can be plugged directly into a pc. It does come with a short USB extension lead just in case your PC's USB port is tucked away.

    A few features described:

    1) Microphone sensitivity - Low = Dictation or High = Conference; Low cuts out some background noise.

    2)Takes one AAA battery.

    3) Does not come with a case or strap / lanyard.

    4) Four quality recording modes.

    5) Has two internal microphones but is a great match for the Olympus ME-51S stereo microphone.

    6) Display shows recording time left

    Olympus WS-210S Digital Voice Recorder

    Full marks go to this piece of equipment. It is very small, stylish and exceedingly easy to use. My criteria for any piece of equipment is: can you use it without reading the instructions?
    Well the WS210S can be used without reading the instructions. Sure there are functions you do need to consult the book for but for the most part you can make a recording, play it back and transfer it to a PC without looking at the book. The controls are logical and easy to operate and the user screens, icons etc all make sense. Not too 'techy'
    The plug in microphone is sensitive and the recordings are of good quality. I havent experimented with quality recordings, only general recording of meetings. For my purposes it picks up all the info i want.
    I am very impressed with it. Battery life is excellent, stereo sound is fantastic and all in all a brilliant little machine which i would highly recommend.

    I got this recorder to record meetings and notes whilst I'm out and about.
    To begin with this device is brown, a dark chocolate brown. This is not clear from most photos. It makes no difference to me but worth mentioning.
    I posted some images of my own to show the true size of this recorder. All of the company images are not in relation to anything. It is smaller than I expected which allows you to carry it in any pocket without weighing you down. I chose this model primarily because of it size and high quality recording. When researching I check the usual review sites; Amazon, Ciao, etc. but also download the product manual [easy to find].

    I get the impression the built in speaker did not get the same attention when designed as the rest of the device. However the playback quality comes into its own when you use earphones. Earphones are included in the box, although I prefer to use my own.
    I hope my ramble has helped in some way; I definitely recommend the Olympus WS-210S over other voice recorders.

    Update: I have had this recorder for over 1 month now. I am still pleased with my choice however I must say this little recorder really loves batteries. I have not measured it but 1 Duracell AA battery does not last as long as I had expected. I do use it a lot for hour long conference calls etc. and use the highest recording setting. I have since bought some rechargeable batteries. Charging via USB might be a useful addition.
    One of my favourite features is the index marking. When recording a call for example if you press the index mark button it will mark that part of the recording. When playing back this allows you to skip to your various index marks; very useful in an hour long call.

    I also purchased the Olympus TP-7 Telephone Recording Device Olympus TP-7 Multi Purpose Adapter for recording telephone calls. This compliments the device perfectly and could account for the poor battery performance.

    Once again an excellent purchase and good value for money.
