I'd been wanting a digital voice recorder to record my lectures, but my options were somewhat limited due to the fact that I use a Mac, and this one was unanimously recommended to me. It hasn't disappointed- the sound quality is generally very good (although the mic is ridiculously sensitive- it's much more effective on lo than hi), I love the fact that the USB plugs directly into the computer (no fiddling around with cords) and battery life seems fairly reasonable.
The only thing that's slightly annoying is the way that third party software is needed to convert the WMA files into MP3s to be played in iTunes, but such programs are easy and inexpensive to purchase, so it isn't a huge issue. A very effective, easy to use product- I'd highly recommend it.

Geeky I might be, but this little device has made the collection of short fact data on the move really very easy. Anyone who spots transport be it air or road will find this more useful than pen and paper, particularly when the weather is inclement. The five files allow for all data from a five day visit to be collected day by day too. It is particularly useful to be able to collect data while driving as it is single handed in operation, and bleeps back to acknowledge commands. I love it!

Not for a lawyer
If you are used to using a dictaphone for dictation, do not get this machine. It has no insert or overwrite function and so is useless for dictation involving any thought.
