Olympus VN-8600PC: A Personal Note Taker for First Time Users

All your ideas in your hands.

More immediate than pen and paper, Olympus has introduced the stylish VN-8600PC, an easy to use and moreover affordable voice recorder that will make an ideal gift for students and graduates and those with a fast paced lifestyle.

Featuring a large full dot display, simple recording modes, extra menu languages and up to double the memory of its predecessors, the extremely portable pocket-sized device is PC compatible, making it easy to play back everything from lectures to daily ‘to do’ lists and memos to self.

No wonder the popular VN series of voice recorders has sold over 10 million units to date.

Large, clear display and easy activation

The VN-8600PC features a large 1.61-inch LCD display that offers a choice of four different font sizes for upper and lower case to highlight text. For the ultimate in convenience operation is via one large central button, with a voice activated recording option for ‘hands free’ use.

High quality recording

The VN-8600PC offers high quality WMA and MP3 format recording. Files can be easily downloaded via USB 2.0 to Mac or PC for archiving or sharing via email without additional software being required.

2GB internal memory

Up to 860 hours of recording time is offered by the VN-8600PC in LP mode thanks to its 2GB internal memory. And, by adjusting the three different quality settings (HQ, SP or LP), new users will soon get to grips with finding the perfect balance between recording time and audio quality.

Recording scenes

To guarantee the best sound quality for a given situation, users can opt for one of five Scene Select options, including ‘conference’, which will highlight the speaker’s voice whilst eliminating any distracting background noise. A ‘DNS’ setting further improves results when the recorder converts speech to text when used in conjunction with speech recognition software.

Long battery life

Additional benefits include longer battery life--up to 51 hours in LP mode using 2x alkaline AAA batteries, so this is one device that truly won’t leave you speechless. The VC-8600PC also uses 30% less energy than its VN series forebears.

Lightweight and portable

The black and white VN-8600PC measures a compact and diminutive 108x39x16.8mm without protrusions, and is a mere 66g including batteries, so neither will it weigh heavy on your pocket, purse, or for that matter wallet.

A wealth of optional extras

Extend battery performance further by investing in a set of BR-401 rechargeable Ni-MH batteries and a compatible BC-400 quick charger. Additional recording aid comes courtesy of ME-10 and ME-15 Tie Clip Microphones, the ME-12 Noise Cancellation Microphone and KA-333, KP-23 and TP-7 cables and adapters.

I bought this item for a friend and we have been so impressed that I'm about to go in and by another for someone else.
Here are the pros that we can see:
- Robust, solid feel to it. Yes it is a bit chunkier than some of the other ones out there but the case should give the extra protection needed for an item used a lot.
- Good clear display. Nice big digits that you can read easily unlike others that are more expensive.
- WMA / MP3 recording. This was a biggie for me. My friend has a PC and I have a Mac. WMA won't play natively in the Mac, you have to convert. Recording in MP3 sorts things for both.
- As it uses 2 x batteries the battery life is really good. It's been going some weeks now and still showing full battery. Don't go with a voice recorder that takes 1 x battery. Friends that have regretted it.
- Buttons, although small are clearly labelled and easy to hit
- Good firmware on the device. Very simple to do the basics. Everything else can be figured in the manual.
- Price is very reasonable when compared to smaller, 'prettier' but less practical recorders
- Perfectly acceptable recording size (2GB) particularly combined with the fact it's easy to get recordings off onto your computer

Cons:
- Recording light could be a bit brighter
- Buttons could be a bit bigger

Had to scrape around for cons though to tell you the truth.

From what we've seen you won't regret this purchase and this will be a solid work-horse doing the job reliably for a good few years to come.

I'm a mature student and this piece of kit has proved invaluable: recording lectures, interviews etc. The sound quality is terrific and you can download the files onto your computer. Highly recommend.

This is a very nice voice recorder. I am using it two weeks now for my lectures and i am very satisfied. I found myself talking with a friend of mine during the lecture. When i got back home i noticed that while i was talking i could clearly listen to the professor as well. That was absolutely amazing since i was sitting next to the recorder and the professor was twenty meters away from my position. I find that approximatelly 25 recording hours are not a big deal but the usb can eliminate that i guess.

Igot on O.K. with this item, its really sensitive, but as I am rather aged and a bit deaf the volume could be better on playback although when connected to the P.C. it was fine. Compresentive instruction booklet made setting up easy. Just 4 star on account of volume for guy's like me

My iPaq died and I needed a replacement to record our band practise sessions, to which I practise when alone. I wondered if this would be too cheap to be a decent replacement. However I have been very impressed indeed with its recording capability. The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is that its own speaker is tinny, which is hugely unfair given its price - deserves 4.9, I suppose! However uploading and playing the file in Windows Media through my speakers gives excellent results. The instructions are fine and the usage is pretty intuitive. A great little purchase.

Purchased and used for the first time this week - firstly for a 3 hour workshop involving 12 people and then for a 1 hour focus group involving 5 people. Made a mistake for the first one as I should have had it set to "Conference" but accidentally set to "Meeting", yet sound quality was still good. Sound quality for smaller meeting was excellent. Easy to upload the files onto PC and playback with a small speaker attached and sound quality was even better. Unit is compact and simple to operate. Overall, I'm very pleased with it.

I was looking for a recorder I could use for University Lectures and this one is just perfect.
I used it for the first time today and even though I sat at one of the back rows (maybe 20 meters away from the teacher), it still records clearly! So for this purpose, I definetely recommend you to get one of these.
