Large, clear display and easy activation
The VN-8500PC features a large 1.61-inch LCD display that offers a choice of four different font sizes for upper and lower case to highlight text. For the ultimate in convenience operation is via one large central button, with a voice activated recording option for ‘hands free’ use.
High quality WMA format recording
The VN-8500PC offers high quality WMA format recording. Files can be easily downloaded via USB 2.0 to Mac or PC for archiving or sharing via email without additional software being required.
1GB internal memory
Up to 430 hours of recording time is offered by the VN-8500PC in LP mode thanks to its bounteous 1GB internal memory. And, by adjusting the three different quality settings (HQ, SP or LP), new users will soon get to grips with finding the perfect balance between recording time and audio quality.
Large, clear display and easy activation
Recording scenes
To guarantee the best sound quality for a given situation, users can opt for one of five Scene Select options, including ‘conference’, which will highlight the speaker’s voice whilst eliminating any distracting background noise. A ‘DNS’ setting further improves results when the recorder converts speech to text when used in conjunction with speech recognition software.
Long battery life
Additional benefits include longer battery life--up to 51 hours in LP mode using 2x alkaline AAA batteries, so this is one device that truly won’t leave you speechless. The VC-8500PC also uses 30% less energy than its VN series forebears.
Lightweight and portable
The black and white VN-8500PC measures a compact and diminutive 108x39x16.8mm without protrusions, and is a mere 66g including batteries, so neither will it weigh heavy on your pocket, purse, or for that matter wallet.
A wealth of optional extras
Extend battery performance further by investing in a set of BR-401 rechargeable Ni-MH batteries and a compatible BC-400 quick charger. Additional recording aid comes courtesy of ME-10 and ME-15 Tie Clip Microphones, the ME-12 Noise Cancellation Microphone and KA-333, KP-23 and TP-7 cables and adapters.

This is a review of the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-8500PC which is being used in conjunction with Dragon NaturallySpeaking Premium (version 11).
Before I go on with this review, Please Note, people who have Dragon NaturallySpeaking "Sandard 11 or lower, 10 for example" will be unable to use the "transcribe" option as it does not exist in the standard version of the software.
It only took me a few minutes to get familiarised with the controls on the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder, and it is very easy to transfer the files from the voice recorder to your computer and/or directly into Dragon NaturallySpeaking for transcribing.
The transcription of your messages is extremely accurate and as you can see and read from this review, there have not been any errors (100% accurate).
The reason for purchasing the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder was so that I can make notes while seeing clients, which can then be transcribed on my return to home. The notes then, can not only be used to jog my memory but can also be sent to the client as an e-mail record of our meeting. One thing to remember here is, Dragon NaturallySpeaking is only be able to recognise your own voice and not the voice of your client/clients, so the transcription would not pick up your clients speech, or if it, did it would probably come out as gobbledygook.
My overall conclusion of the unit is as follows: the recorder is extremely easy to use and works very well with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. The only small complaint I would have is the USB cable included in the package is extremely short, and if you do not have your computers USBs port to hand then this could be a problem. I would consider purchasing a longer USB 2.0 cable lead A MALE to MINI B 5 PIN cable at the time you purchase the unit, this will make your life a lot easier for transferring files.

This product is great, even if recording from a distance (at university lectures, for example).
It is very easy and intuitive to use and has a lot of memory. It is also very easy to connect to your PC and transfer the files over (with a Mac or Windows PC).
If you are getting heavy use out of it though (as I am) then average quality batteries need to be changed about every 4 to 5 weeks (or about every 45 hours of recording). In this case, it may be worth looking at recorders that can be charged from the mains.
Otherwise, a great quality and very portable product.
