    Got this today. Nice and dinky with good sized controls. Has mic and earphone sockets. 512MB is fine. Easy to operate. This is for ideas, a quick way to record song ideas (go into a music shop...), conversations to recall or keep, etc. Great way to add to one's brain memory. Voice activation is good (you can set sensitivity) as are marker points. You can buy add ons if you like. I like and like it.

    The manual is in the recorder's flash memory; so plug in the supplied USB cable and it's there - it is not online for some strange reason. As far as I can see, it operates as it says. In playback mode, press and HOLD >>| to FF or |<< to FR; you can see the time elapse +/-. It will stop at any marker points you created. Sound quality is fine. The internal speaker is not the best (it's of necessity tiny) but it is okay and headphones improve the sound a lot as does listening on a PC. One other point is turn the back where the speaker is to face you during payback since the sound quality improves. Obviously, I have not yet used it a lot but was interested to verify the two main complaints aired here and they don't stand up - imv...

    I took delivery of my little VN-5500pc yesterday, and used it last night.
    The scenario was a meeting of two people at right angles at a small table and holding a conversation. The recorder, with mic set to 'conference' was between us.
    Got home, played it back, serious disappointment! Crackly, hissy, distorted sound making it practically impossible - no, change that, impossible to hear the conversation. I tried headphones. Only got the sound into one ear - and equally as distorted as the inbuilt speaker.
    This recorder might be ok if you just want to talk into it in short bursts to make an aide memoire, but for anything else? No way... Today I gritted the teeth, cracked open the wallet, and bought a professional quality recorder.

    It takes a lot for me to bother to write a review, but when you buy something that not only doesn't do what it says, but wastes hours of your time requiring you to finally find out the truth, then it's worth a few minutes to try and save others the bother. The fact is, this dictaphone is relatively cheap. So Olympus skimp on things which no doubt it probably costs them more to remove! Eg if you can easily FF or Rewind then I'm a banana; if you add onto the end of something you just happen to have stopped as opposed to have paused then ditto; if you think the manual is anything but 2 pages of indescribably small and unhelpful diagrams which are then helpfully repeated in every language from Swahili to Martian then you're a banana! There's no manual online (even though they say there is) and you can't pause at all! The fact is, Olympus don't want you to buy this one, so they sell you rubbish in the hope that you will 'move up the ladder'. Well, it won't be with your company, sonny boy. And that goes for cameras too (and the mountain, if you had anything to do with that)
