Verified Purchase
I have just received this item and within 10 minutes I had it up and running including the programme. Hardly had to look at the manual it was so easy and I am no computer whiz.
I thoroughly recommend this product. It pics up voice extremely well and plays back as clear as a bell on the device as well as the PC. Does exactly what I want it to without being too high tech with unnecessary features. The set up feature from disc is neat and simple. If you just want to record voice, then this is the one!

I love this product, and would purchase it again.

The only difference between this recorder and the next one up: VN-3100PC, (which my daughter has) is that this one has half the memory, and is black instead of blue, so any reviews for the VN-3100PC will apply to this one also.

The free microphone that you get does not include the cable and tie clip that you would get if you purchased microphone separately.

Overall I'm extremely happy I ordered this.

The Olympus VN-2100PC digital voice recorder has a load of excellent features, and one pain. The good bits: it's simple to make and play back recordings, and to organise them in folders. The unit itself is light and small enough to fit in any pocket, so easy to take and use anywhere. It runs for ages on a pair of AAA batteries, and has plenty of recording capacity, depending on the quality of recording you choose. The bad bit? If you want to transfer the recordings somewhere else, it's a bit fiddly. First, you have to set up the "Digital Wave Player" software on your PC, then transfer the files. But they're not MP3 files, but something called WAV format. If you want MP3 files, eg to play on my iPod, which I synch to an Apple, you have to download a "Switch Sound File Converter" program. This is available free on the internet, but is another level of hassle. None of this detracts from the basic quality of the recorder - but easier transfer of files would be a bonus.

Pro: easy to use, solid build, works. Con: file transfer a hassle.

Have to agree with Caz, this device does exactly what it says on the tin. I was told to buy a voice recorder (for training purposes at work); I must admit that I was unaware that tape-less devices existed (luddite that I am) but this has proved to be a whole lot better than I had expected. It's so simple and so efficient. I didn't even need to use the instruction manual - but then, I'm a bloke. Wearing a suit it's easy to slip it into my breast pocket where it's just about unseen yet it can record the conversations that take place in reasonable quality - could be used to blackmail someone I should imagine but I haven't gotten around to that yet. And setting up the software on my PC was simplicity itself, enabling me to transfer the recorded meetings and then delete them completely from the hand-held device. Excellent value for money because the only thing you'll need in the future will be another pair of batteries (the first ones are included, by the way) and I get the feeling that with almost no moving parts battery life will be good. Feels like it will last forever.

Appears fine at first, but the controls have a very annoying fault - fast forwarding or rewinding is done with the same buttons that jump to another file either forward or backward, and it's very easy to accidentally jump to the end of a recording - very irritating when you're 20 minutes in to a 90 minute interview. I agree with the other comments re: Digital Wave Player - it's a pain, and life would be far simpler if the recorder could be plugged into any PC and seen as an external hard drive from which to drag and drop audio files.
Worse still, my VN-2100PC has now packed up altogether. It won't transfer files via DWP without an error message popping up halfway through the process, and it dies without warning even on fresh batteries. Useless.

This is not compatible with Explorer or Windows Media. It has to be used on machines that have downloaded the Digital Wave Software (disc included) therefore it would be extremely cumbersome to use this on any but your own personal PC as that would require downloading software wherever you go. I doubt whether the saved files could be e-mailed.

Apart from that, the quality of playback is extremely poor. It is very hard to hear what is being said on the recorder.

It is very light and plasticky in feel. Not recommended.

As soon as I got this I started playing with it. To my amazement this was one of the easiest to work with devices I ever had. Who needs a manual :)
I like the voice activation feature, it's really nice.
Get one now if you haven't got one already, for this price you can't get any better. It's an absolute bargain.

this voice recorder is excellent for students wanting to record lectures or make interviews etc. though the feature discription of this product does not state that recorded files can be mp3 file, it really does, but you need to look for them inside the files of the programm itself. the only things that i did not like about it is that it does not allow transfering files from the computer, but the reverse is allowed. Recommended, easy to use and useful
