    5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent entry-level voice recorder 18 Mar 2005
    By A Customer
I used to use a more bulky dictaphone with a tape. I was using it quite a lot for meetings and interviews and decided to purchase the Olympus VN-120.
The VN-120 is excellent for those that do a lot of travelling as it's really compact and light plus it has no tapes or moving parts. It only weighs 65g and is small enough to carry with you wherever you go ensuring that it's available whenever you need it.
It has three folders available so you are able to organise your notes accordingly but most of all, there's no tape! It has a handy alarm function, which you can set to remind yourself of any appointments or meetings.
It's small in size as well so can sit discretely in meetings (without making a whirring noise unlike more-cumbersome tape recorders). It's navigation features are really intuitive so you can have it up and running within no time at all.
You can use it to record up to four hours depending on which of the three settings you use. The sound quality on playback is excellent - there's no way I'm going back to tapes!
Oh - and it looks great!

Olympus VN-5000 Digital Voice Recorder (141985) (Silver)
I was very pleased with the recorder. I could even record bird calls on holiday in Iceland and interviews with my friends. However, I found out subsequently that I cannot download these to my computer. There is another PC model (costs about twice as much) which can connect to a computer. It would have been helpful to have a warning with the VN-5000 that you cannot download the recordings to a computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent model and highly versatile 12 July 2007
Have used this for four years and cannot fault it. It is light and very easy to use. I initially thought I would be using it for work but have found it ideal for keeping a record of the birds I see on a daily basis. With three files I have had notes from meetings in one, a list of 50 birds in another and then reminders of what I have to do in the day in the third. Its smaller than a mobile phone and the batteries last a long time. With 2hrs recording time you dont need to spend more. I'd highly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars can't store what you record 30 Aug 2009
    Verified Purchase
This is probably OK for anyone who wants to record something like a lecture, play it back once and then delele it, but no use if you plan to keep what you have recorded on your computer as there is no USB connection or similar. It would have been helpful if Amazon had made this clear in the product description.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice compact piece of kit 5 Nov 2006
    Verified Purchase
I bought this being tired of tapes, miniCD`s and the like plus having a poor memory. Its a VERY light compact piece of kit that fits into your pocket or clips onto your shirt pocket. Easy to use, and just so helpful. Its the nicest item I have bought for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant device! 7 July 2009
So small and light this is a brilliant voice recorder. I used this for my dissertation interviews (Masters) and each lasted like an hour and an half which this had no problem storing in a file. There are four folders and each I think each holds 100 file. I only used like 2 files per folder for my interviews but would be brilliant for others who have to use voice recorders on a daily basis. Very simple to use and even I, technologically challenged, could use it plus the buttons are nice size so wasn't fiddly at all. The only thing is that when listening back to the recordings with the earphones plugged in, is that the sound only comes out of the left earphone for some reason. I tried it with 3 different earphones (1 brand new!) just in case that was the problem and still the sound was from the left. Slightly odd but only a minor complaint after all its so useful. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who's fed up with using the old tape recorders which are so loud and distracting - I wished I discovered it sooner for my undergrad degree!

    4.0 out of 5 stars REVIEW 24 July 2009
    By V.
This neat little voice recorder was exactly what I wanted. It is so handy - picking up the voice perfectly and playing back loudly - battery lasts for ages and although you can't keep what you've recorded on a disk (as with a mini disc recorder) the transcribing from it is so much easier.
No mike needed. It is the most resourceful mini gadget I've had for ages.
