Product Description

It's not only extreme sports fans who appreciate rugged cameras and the new Olympus TOUGH TG-4 flagship will resonate with anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors and wants to capture their experiences in excellent quality, in any environment, without worrying about the light or the state of equipment. The TG-4 is a powerful all-rounder but its most impressive single feature is the super-bright 25-100mm* lens with a 1:2.0 maximum aperture at wide zoom settings. This allows it to capture spectacular, colourful, low-noise shots in light-starved environments where fast shutter speeds and low ISO settings are indispensable. For example, at 15 metres** underwater, where the TG-4 operates successfully without an underwater housing - or even an extra light. Divers will also appreciate the new Underwater HDR feature, the built-in manometer, the glove-friendly and customizable mode dial and four different macro settings. Other highlights include Live Composite, RAW file support and AF Area, which allows you shift the focus within the frame.

Box Contains

LI-92B Lithium Ion battery
F-2AC Adapter
CB-USB cable
Hand Strap
Warranty Card
Instruction Manual
Olympus Viewer 3 Software CD-ROM

From the Manufacturer

TOUGH TG-4 - For most extreme experiences!

No compromises on image quality, that's the goal for my sailing trips or when enjoying spectacular landscapes from the top of a mountain. Waterproof up to a water pressure equivalent of 15m depth, freezeproof down to -10°C, I can depend on my TG-4 for breathtaking pictures even under the most extreme conditions. And if dropped, it’s shockproof from heights of up to 2.1m and also crushproof up to 100kg, so in the rough and tumble of being on the move, the TOUGH TG-4 has got what it takes to capture my active lifestyle.

High-speed performance

Whether you’re going for coral reefs, wrecks or the marine life: with the TOUGH TG-4 at the ready, you have a waterproof digital camera that performs to the highest level - even in the depths of the ocean. Featuring a super-bright maximum aperture of 1:2.0, the high-speed lens delivers breathtaking shots of your diving or snorkelling adventures, with brilliant colours and bright seascapes.

Excellent outdoor gear

The TG-4 is ready for any outdoor challenge: rugged mountain terrain in sub-zero temperatures, heavy rain-showers, snow and sand storms, dark and rough forests. The ingenious OLYMPUS seal system means the TG-4 functions in the most extreme conditions – wherever you go.

Breathtaking nature shots

The TOUGH TG-4 has the power to capture everything nature has to offer. Use any one of the four macro shooting modes, e.g. the unique focus stacking mode, to express your creativity. Get super close to insects, flowers, snowflakes, and capture them in clear, microscopic style.

Get a wider view of the world

When you’re in the middle of nature, you don’t always have the chance to set the scene. But with the TG-4’s 4x wide optical zoom, you don’t need to. Combined with high-speed autofocus, it lets you zoom from 25 to 100mm (35mm camera equivalent) and capture amazingly clear shots from a distance. Or zoom out for a broader picture of nature’s spectacularly wide vistas.

Shoot and share instantly

Now it’s easier than ever to share your adventures. Thanks to the TG-4’s built-in Wi-Fi and OI.Share capability. No matter where you are, wirelessly transfer photos to your smartphone or tablet. Or use your mobile device as a remote control for the TG-4’s settings and shooting. Enjoy fast, accurate tracking of your adventures with the TG-4’s next-generation GPS. Add GPS data to your photos when sharing, by installing the OI.Track app on your smartphone.

Expand your TOUGH-ness

With the TG-4, you also have an entire system of accessories ready to make your adventures even better. An underwater housing, LED Light Guide, Fisheye or Tele Converter, various carrying cases, Underwater Wide Converter and Flashes. Name the game and enjoy a world of creative options wherever your expeditions take you!

I've owned several cameras including tough and action cameras for many years, I'm finally upgrading from my Olympus a u725SW to this Olympus TG-4. I mostly use them out rowing or kayaking and at the beach.

First the NEGATIVES, there aren't many!
The panorama function isn't great, of the few i've done only about half look ok. It only allows for combining three images and in my opinion doesn't overlap them enough to get reliable results, which leaves wonky horizons where the alignment failed. It also takes a little while to process, so if you're out taking pics do a pano last, so it can process while you walk.

I think it should have come with a case, even a simple one, my old 725sw did.

The RAW files are .ORF and as yet i've not been able to open them, a quick google suggests that it should be possible but a lot of people with the same issues, I will update the review when I suss it out. It also only takes RAW with very specific settings, 4:3 aspect ratio and single shot.

The GOOD
The macro modes are fun and work really well, the ability to automatically capture and combine different focused images (focus stacking) into one image is ideal, I used this in many of my rock pool pics. or it can keep them separate; I wish i'd known about that one whilst trying to capture a moving woodlouse!

The HDR mode is good and improves shots, rather than being so overblown so that it's obvious or arty.

The timelapse and star trail features are something i'm interested to try out doing both of these with an action camera and DSLR respectively. I think the TG-4 can only take 99 successive shots though but that's fine.

This is a robust camera that is easy to use and takes clear photos. Like many cameras it has a huge amount of shooting modes built in to help you get the most out of your shots. All modes allow you to fiddle around with settings such as aperture size and shutter speed to further tweak things and get a better photograph. However photography is a skill like playing the guitar and takes a lot of effort to master.
This camera has a lot on it, I spent more than an hour with the manual reading through and playing around with all the things that it does and some of them are quite neat. If you have a smart phone you can log on to the camera's wifi, the camera generates the wifi so it is not that you can only use this when you are logged in to a network, it works anywhere. The free app (I used iPhone) allows you to operate the shutter, set up a shot and transfer photos from the camera to the phone. You activate it 'the easy way' by scanning a 2D code with your phone which sets up the wifi. It was a little confusing but worked after a couple of goes. The camera also has a GPS function, which also has a confusing aspect. Olympus like you to calibrate the GPS which you can do by connecting the camera to a phone or your computer. What isn't in the manuals is that you have to download an app to perform the calibration, this is straightforward but not explained.

In terms of modes there are a few worth a mention, it has super slow mo, time lapse and a mode that only activates bright pixels. The latter is for star gazing and allows you to track the movement of stars in a single exposure without over exposing the whole sensor. The macro modes take composite pictures which increases the depth of field.

This is just a great camera, and I was over the moon to be offered it; I have a few cameras and a cam corder but this is just going to be my camera of choice from now on. It comes with a charger, a strap to tie to your hand and a comprehensive instruction manual - as well as the CD to upload to your computer. It does not have a case but as its shock proof etc they probably thought you were unlikely to need one.

Functions wise it is water proof or resistant to around 15 meters. It can operate to -10⁰C, it is shock proof but this just means if you drop it accidentally and not down a mountain and it is `crush proof' once again don't try testing this with a tank or anything.

It has built in Wi Fi so you can transfer photos to your smart phone or tablet. It has a good zoom though some commentators have complained of its limitations. It can zoom from 25 to 100mm (same as a 35mm) and I have had no issues with it. The picture quality uses 16 mega pixels and I can remember when 3 was state of the art, so you are able to capture some stunning pictures in HD. It also has a video option (HD 1080p) so you can capture live footage - which is pretty standard these days and the quality is to the high end of very good. It can do rapid shots too - well over ten - which is enough, any more and just use the video.

Power wise it is supposed to take around 400 shots off of one charge, and I have found even using the flash it just keeps going. It also takes SD cards which can vary in quality - go for the best. If you are new to this type of camera I strongly advise reading the manual first as there is so much here that you only get with a quality camera.
